How to unmap domain from wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to map joshuaneel.com to a Weebly website I made via my GoDaddy domain host. However, I am getting this error message on GoDaddy: ‘The zone file is unavailable because the domain’s set nameservers do not belong to this registrar’. I do not know how to unmap joshuaneel.com from WordPress. The nameservers currently showing on GoDaddy are as follows: NS2.WORDPRESS.COM and
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM. I tried to delete these, but that option is greyed out.

Have you already set your underlying WPcom site joshuaneeldotcom.wordpress.com as the primary site in your Domain Dashboard? https://wordpress.com/my-domains/

Yes, I set it as the primary, but nothing changed in my GoDaddy DNS Zone settings.

The good news is that for me everything is now showing up on your base wordpress.com address at joshuaneeldotcom.wordpress.com

If you are still not able to change the DNS pointers in your domain management dashboard on GoDaddy, then I’d follow up with GoDaddy support directly.

  • Hi there,

Your domain is not registered here, but only mapped here, so we can’t make any changes that would help with this. As GoDaddy is your domain registrar, any changes to the name servers need to be made there.

Additionally, if you’re not going to use that domain with a WordPress.com site, there is no reason to have a domain mapping upgrade here, so you can cancel your mapping upgrade for a full refund from the purchases page:
    https://wordpress.com/purchases/

    @kokkieh- thanks for checking.

@jneel2-First, I don’t know what happened here, but when I posted my reply on January 1st, joshuaneel.com redirected to joshuaneeldotcom.wordpress.com Now it doesn’t.

Second, although joshuaneel.com was registered in 2014, there are a series of notices on GoDaddy that in order to make any change in the domain, you need to contact your domain registrar.

Kokkieh – Thank you for that information. However, when I attempt to request a refund, WP states I am past the 2-day refund request period. That seems like too short a time frame to be considered reasonable. Is it possible to request a refund more than 2 days after purchase? My 401club.com domain is within a 30-day window, and that is the domain for which I would like to request a refund. Is that possible?

Justin – Thanks for the tip. I’ve decided to cancel Weebly instead, and keep the joshuaneel.com domain mapped to WP because I discovered that Weebly charges to add video components to my website. Thank you, though, for offering that advice about my problem.

  • Custom domains can only be refunded for the first 48 hours, as we have to pay the funds over to the registrar after that time, so we no longer have it to refund.

Domain mappings can be refunded up to 30 days, like all other upgrades besides custom domains.

The only domain you had mentioned until now has been joshuaneel.com and my previous answer was based on that domain.

The domain mapping for 401club.com is only three days old, so you should be able to cancel it yourself from the Purchases page for a full refund. If you’re not able to do that, let me know and confirm that this is the upgrade you want to cancel and I can do it for you.
