How to Unmap Expired Domain
-
I paid for domain mapping at WordPress, but my domain name at LCN has been “expired” and is in “redemption” phase awaiting a fee of £50 to restore it. They didn’t send me warnings. So all I get is the Not Found page.
I can’t get to the nameservers at LCN to change anything without first paying to restore the domain. How do I restore my wordpress.com blog without seeing the Domain Not Found page each time? Do I have to ask WordPress to delete the domain or unmap it somehow?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The domain is iandsmith.com, and the WordPress blog is iandsmith.wordpress.com.
I changed the primary blog to WordPress and that stopped the Not Found problem.
To avoid the £50, I’m going to register the domain though WordPress when the domain becomes available, unless anyone else has a better idea. Meanwhile, my domain is down.

You’ll need to access your blog’s Dashboard via [blog].wordpress.com/wp-admin/ and change the primary domain at Upgrades -> Domains.
As for the domain itself, you might want to consider paying the recovery fee to your registrar. Expired domains become the property of the registrar and can take up to 90 days to be returned to the public market, if ever.

Sometimes a squatter will grab the domain and then it can cost hundreds of dollars pounds or whatever to get it back – there was a person that was looking at that problem for a domain that they used related to a business – best as staff-blorbo says to belly up to the bar and pay the tab – then you get the use of the domain back at once – if you have any branding or traffic to your site you will be better off not to confuse them with name changes.
