How to Update WordPress via FTP properly?
-
I was notified by Network solutions that a site I had made had been used by email spammers who exploited Contact Form 7. They took the site offline and told me I need to manually update the site using FTP.
I have googled the process but have found varying answers. I just want to do the minimum to get network solutions to make the site live again. I have already deleted the contact form 7 plugin which I will reinstall with captcha once it goes live again.
can someone point me to the specific steps to update my wordpress site safely? I really don’t want to rebuild the site.
Thank you!

There is no FTP access https://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/ to blogs hosted by wordpress.COM and those are the only sites we provide support for here.
You are not referring to a site hosted by wordpress.COM and we do not provide support for any other sites. You are posting to the wrong support forum.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
As you are referring to a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_PageSee also https://apps.wordpress.org/support/
