how to upgrade an existing plan
-
I have been using a basic, free plan to get the feel of how WordPress works. Now that I have the hang of it, I want to upgrade so I can monetize my site, along with mapping my already existing domain. How do I do this? I cannot find a support person to help, only this primitive message system. Who can help me with this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, I have. And I’ve wadded through other WordPress pages on starting a website. But nowhere tells me the process of upgrading. If it’s as simple as making the payment, that’s great, but it doesn’t say so. I’ve looked the page you referenced and all it does is give me a price, it says nothing about upgrading. But if all I need to do is give them money, will my login automatically change everything so I can use the additional features in the paid version? It doesn’t say so. And what about porting my domain? Is that a separate process with additional cost? Those are the first set of questions I have but the answers are not addressed online, and there are not any real, live people that I can discuss specific questions with. So I am waiting until I can understand what is not being said before I do anything. I don’t want to buy a package only to find out I should have bought something else.

As soon as you upgrade, it will provide you with the paid features right away.
Within the link I sent, there is a little “i” next to each description of what is included. If you click on it, it provides more details.
Example: Next to Custom Domain Name – “Get a free custom domain name (mywebsite.com) with this plan to use for your website.” This is offered with Personal, Business and Premium plans. The link below explains that you will receive a credit towards either registering a new domain or mapping one you already own

“Plans and other purchases can be canceled within 30 days of purchasing.” https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/

Hi there,
To upgrade, go to My Site ->Plans and select a plan. You can also select a plan directly from the pricing page @mariahpierson linked to. Once you select a plan you’ll go through the checkout process automatically.
To add a domain, go to My Site ->Domains ->Add after buying your plan, though you should see the option to register or connect a domain during the plan setup.
And what about porting my domain? Is that a separate process with additional cost?
The Pricing and the Plans pages clearly indicate that one free domain registration or domain mapping is included with every plan.
You can see how to register a new domain here:
And how to connect an existing domain here:
Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)
You can also find detailed information on how every upgrade included in our various plans work here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/category/upgrades/
there are not any real, live people that I can discuss specific questions with.
The Pricing and Plans pages also indicate that free plans get support from the community forums, and that plan owners have access to live chat support.

Yes, thanks to both of you.
I used to work in a support role with a major news website. We made it so that the process was simple enough for the newbie, and thorough enough for the experienced user. I love WordPress and what it offers, so I would suggest you have another page with step by step instructions to answer questions like I just tossed out. Place yourself in the shoes I’m in and try to come up with all the questions I might have, then draw up a basic instructions page covering all the steps on upgrades. Think like your customer for a day and pretend you are confused about what to do. I know of three people who gave up when they couldn’t get simple answers and simply stuck with less than they wanted because the steps to upgrade and what was covered wasn’t addressed. However, I now have what I need. Thank you to both of you. I will take care of this tonight.

Glad we could help.
And thanks for the suggestions. At the moment we’re revising our total plan structure, which means these things are a bit in flux. But our long term plan is to have user-guides exactly like what you’re describing. We just need to finalise the current product changes first, then we can start working on that.

I always like the idea of constant improvement, your comments about that make someone like me smile.
My ultimate goal is to work my website up to a major operation in three years. That means taking it step-by-step until I get there (thus the questions about upgrade process). So by that time I’m sure I will have moved through the upward upgrade process a few more times. Don’t forget about guys like me when you are revising your planning. I am just one but I assure you there are tens of thousands just like me using WordPress to help build something useful. Make our lives easier and you will have a LOT of happy users.
Will my next step upward in subscription plan be altered or affected your new paid plans?
Also, in your planning process, if you would like a interested “citizen reviewer or advisor”, I’d be delighted to help. A viewpoint from the outside has helped my various businesses since I usually look at things from the inside.

Will my next step upward in subscription plan be altered or affected your new paid plans?
We’re mostly looking at the features included in our plans to ultimately add more value to them. So the upgrade process shouldn’t change to much, but the pricing and content of upgrades might.
You’re always welcome to post here in the forums, or to contact us via email/chat once you own an upgrade to offer feedback. At times we also reach out to users specifically, but that is done on a more random basis, but thanks for offering to volunteer.
