How to upload a theme bought from another website
-
I bought my domain, whatshedoesnow.com from Godaddy. I do not pay WordPress to host my site. I bought a theme from envye.com but cannot upload it onto my blog. What do I do? I’m totally clueless about this kind of thing, so help is really appreciated!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Amy!
On WordPress.com, you are unable to upload your own themes, for security reasons. The theme that you purchased was for use on a self-hosted installation of WordPress (using WordPress.org software) rather than here on WordPress.com. We do have a large array of themes to choose from however, and they can all be seen at http://theme.wordpress.com.
If there’s anything else I can help with, please let me know.

Thank you for your help! That makes sense! If I buy a WordPress premium theme, do I need to upgrade my blog to WordPress premium? Or can I just continue paying wordpress for having my own domain name, without paying for an upgrade, and purchase the premium theme? I hope that makes sense!

Hey Amy,
Yes, if you’re referring to purchasing one of the premium themes that we have on offer here on WordPress.com, then yes, purchasing the theme upgrade is the only upgrade that you need to purchase in order to be able to use that theme on your site.
I see that you have the Domain Mapping upgrade, so you would need to continue paying for and maintaining that separately in order to be able to use your custom domain, however, the premium theme is just a one-off charge, whereas the domain mapping is an annual recurring fee.
If there’s anything else that I can help you with, just shout :)

That’s great, thank you! I’m looking at purchasing the Watson theme, do I need to upgrade to use the custom design or is that part of paying for the theme?
-
Nope, you can just upgrade to using the Watson theme and that’s all you would need to do to use it.
The Custom Design upgrade offers some additional functionality, like the ability to add your own CSS, and change fonts and colors on your site, but they are not required to use the theme.

Great, thank you! So I have to upgrade to change fonts and colours? Will the colours and fonts that come with the Watson theme on the Demo, the black and white, be the automatic colours? Thanks for all your help :)
-
Howdy,
Yes the demo site is the “plain installation” without any upgrades, so you “get what you see”. The Custom Design upgrade would allow you to change any of the fonts and colors throughout the site. If there’s anything else I can clarify, just let me know!

Thank you for all your help! If I buy the Watson theme, will all of my posts still be there when I set it up? Or do I have to start fresh?
-
Hey,
Yes, the theme (regardless of which theme) is completely independent of your content, so you can change your theme as often as you want without risking losing or altering your content.
If there’s anything else you need help with, just let me know.
