How to upload password protected files
-
I am trying to upload password protected files onto wordpress.com but not sure how. People recommended getting a plug in but it doesn’t look like you can do that on wordpress.com only in wordpress.org. Does anyone know how to get around this.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no truly secure way to upload password protected files on WordPress.com. You could upload the file to your medial library and then attach it to a post or page that you set to be password protected. But to be honest, if someone knew the URL of the file, I believe they could still get to it.

Hey root josh,
Thanks for replying. Does that mean that I ned to pay for a web domain and download wordpress.org before I can download any plugins that will let me do that? Any tips on how to go about doing this?
Thanks
Andy

This guide will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org instance:

As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:
If you’d like assistance moving your WordPress.com site to WordPress.org, we have a service called Guided Transfer that does all the work for you. Check it out to see if it’s right for you:

Take a look through those pages and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

And yes, to be clear, in order to use plugins you will need to set up a self-hosted WordPress.org site.

You could always upload the file to a site elsewhere and password protect the post here. That would have the same effect, provided the place you hosted the file allows hotlinking. And isn’t obvious. If everyone knows you’re a dropbox fan, they’ll guess it’s in your dropbox and try and crack that by guessing the URL. Password protection is not great protection.

Individual PDF files can be password protected then uploaded to a blog here – (some other file types can also work the same way)

Both Auxclass and Raincoaster have good ideas as well. However, I have a feeling that, if these password protected files are really important toy our site plans, you may be better off looking at a self-hosted WordPress site rather than WordPress.com.

Regardless of where your site or files are hosted (mine are on Box.com), password protected files are only as secure as the people who have the password and/or file.
