How to use a subdomain to get a bilingual site
-
Hi,
I have been racking my brain how to do this. So far, my best option is #3 from this page, using a subdomain. Ex: mydomain.com, french.mydomain.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/set-up-a-multilingual-blog/Unfortunately, I’m confused on how to get a subdomain with wordpress.com. This page only explains how to do it with an external registrar:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#adding-a-subdomain-if-your-domain-is-mapped-to-wordpress-comIt is also unclear how much this will cost. Mapping is 13$ for a subdomain but do I need to pay the full price of registering another domain for french.mydomain.com?
I’m new to this and I just want to make sure I know the costs and effort I will have to put into this. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi there,
Sorry for the confusion! If your domain is already registered here at WordPress.com, you can use the first set of instructions to map a subdomain to another WordPress.com site:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#instructions-for-mapping-subdomains
You’ll need to have that root domain (for example, mydomain.com) registered either here at WordPress.com or with an external registrar before you can start mapping subdomains like french.mydomain.com. Once that’s registered, each new subdomain you map to a site will be $13 for that subdomain mapping. (The subdomain mapping is a separate cost from the domain registration itself, but you only need to register the domain once.)
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Hi Rachel,
Maybe it’s because I’m a total newbie, but I think my problems come from a misunderstood notion, could you clarify this for me?
To use a subdomain for a French version of a registered domain with wordpress.com, I need to OWN another domain that I need to map as a subdomain?
I.E., I need to register and pay the premium package twice just to be able to have a bilingual website (1 custom menu per language), like in example 3 of this page?

Hi there,
Yes, you will need to create a new site and map the subdomain there. If you want that site to have the WordPress.com Premium features, you’ll need to buy the Premium plan for that site, too. (That’s because the premium plan is per-site, and if you set it up that way the French subdomain will technically be its own site.)
Please let me know if you have any other questions!
