How to use Google Apps & WordPress together

    Hi,

    As a spare time Moderator, I am looking after a Google Apps domain with 50 users.
    I would like to add a blog facility to the domain. Unfortunately, this functionality is not included in Google Apps. I’ve looked at Blogger, but am not impressed. WordPress is what it should be!

    The blog will be a private blog accessible only to my 50 domain users. I want them to use the Login details of the Google Apps domain. I’ve noticed I can map the standard URL of the blog to an URL of a sub domain of my Google Apps domain. This will cost me US$ 12.00 per year.
    By default, a standard WordPress blog allows access for 35 private users. In order to grand all my 50 users access to the Blog, I have to pay extra, Unlimited private users US$ 29.97 per year.
    Total annual cost is US$ 41.97 per year.

    An additional ‘requirement’ I have is that when my users surf to my Blog from within my domain they shouldn’t have to enter their Login details. Authorization took place when they entered the Google Apps domain.

    Does anyone have experience with this?
    What good advice could you give me?
    Is there a smarter, cheaper way to achieve this?

    I’m quite curious to your suggestions.

    There is no way to tie google login information to a blog here. People that access the private blog here would have to have a wordpress.COM account and then use that to view the blog here. I don’t even know if that is possible with a self-hosted blog. There are several “membership” plugins for self-hosted blogs, but I’ve never seen any that tie into google stuff. They are always stand-alone registration/membership systems.

    Would this be a possuble route?

    There is no way that I know of to use google’s account system to control access to a wordpress blog, either here or self-hosted. There are third-party plugins to allow others to log in to COMMENT using third party usernames, but nothing I know of for a membership sort of thing.

    There are two things required here. First it is only going to be possible with a self-hosted blog (figure $10 to $25 per month in hosting fees). You are going to have to have some sort of membership plugin and none I know of allow third-party login. Most likely you are going to have to have something custom coded by a developer, and building a membership plugin with third-party login capabilities is probably going to be complex, so the costs could be very high. The cost could run anywhere from $500 to as much as $5000 depending on what it takes to develop and test the code.. Then of course you have to realize that that plugin is going to have to be updated once in a while due to changes with wordpress, so the initial cost is only the beginning.

    For plugins and questions regarding self-hosted blogs, you need to inquire over at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ .

    The plugin you reference takes care of login for a self-hosted blog (giving them access to the dashboard or for commenting), but it does not take care of the membership side of things, which would require a different plugin. WordPress.ORG software does not have any sort of “private” setting. That has to be accomplished with plugins or custom programming.

    @thesacredpath
    Thanks. Your help is much appreciated. I have to start again and re-think the whole thing. Or else, stick to the primitive Blogger. It’s free that counts for something.
