How to use grid templates?

I’m currently using the Motif theme. I’ve few clarifications and questions.

When posting posts, I include them under different categories. And I’ve a custom menu with the categories. So my blog shows the different posts under the different categories in the menu. However, I’ve used only two pages – one as the static front page and another as an introductory page.

Now, when I try to use grid templates for my posts – I see that I can only assign grid layout to my pages, and not to my categories. But whatever posts I have posted, comes under categories, and not pages.

What I need is a way to apply grid template to my posts – so that when a link(category) on the menu is clicked, the posts appear in a grid.

    1. Is there an appropriate theme for this option?
    2. Is there a way to change the categories to pages – without loss of data?

    Thank you.

    Can’t be done with Motif.

There are several. Themes with an optional grid-based or tiled image link page in which the items link to posts include:

It’s not clear what you mean. Categories are labels assigned to posts. Static pages are publishable constructions which may contain text, images, videoes, etc. Are you referring to custom menu links?

Thanks a lot. I’ll go through these themes to see if they fit the bill.

I’ve a custom menu that lists the categories. So the menu has categories(if you check my blog you’ll see the menu with THE POSTS, THE POETRY, WRITING101 POSTS are actually categories. The THE WELCOME MAT & WHAT IS THIS? are pages.

    Anyways,

I think the problem will be solved with the listed themes. Thanks again.

And, by the way, what is the name of this feature?

…I’ve a custom menu that lists the categories….

Modifying custom menu items has no effect upon the URLs that they link to. They are just links. With no loss of data, you may change a category link to a page link with the same name or “navigation label,” by deleting the first and adding the second.

And, by the way, what is the name of this feature?

Feature – Apply grid template to my posts.

I don’t know. Perhaps gallery format posts page might be used as an umbrella term to describe the feature. I mistakenly referred to the feature as “optional.” Actually, the feature is just the style of the posts or blog page on those themes I listed. It is typically used as the front page, but needn’t be. Those themes which display image links on the posts page in even rows separated by spaces are generally called “grid-based.” Other themes in the list I provided display the images in rows without spaces between them, either in even rows where each image is the same size and shape (“square tiled,” or “rectangular tiled”), or with images of different sizes and shapes combined (“tiled mosaic style”). There is at least one theme with a grid of circular images on the posts page. So there are at least four different styles or sub-styles to consider.

What they have in common is that in each case the images are displayed in a type of gallery format and the images link to posts. The different styles of these posts pages are somewhat analogous to the different styles in a WordPress.com gallery.

Amendment, on “loss of data” by replacing custom menu links to categories with links to pages:

What would be lost by doing so are links to the dynamic category archives pages. Static pages are not dynamic. Unless you add links in them they contain no information about posts. Even if you do the information will not automatically update when you create new posts. Conversely a category archives page updates instantly to reflect each new post assigned to that category.
