how to use media library image as custom header

I’m new to blogging, and have been playing around with various themes, widgets, etc. All good fun. But on my husband’s MacBook, I can’t figure out how to use an image from my media library as my custom header. I did it once on my pc, but after changing themes a few times today, I can’t seem to repeat it. Agghh!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Unless you have the Custom CSS upgrade, you don’t use an image from the Media library. You have to upload an image directly from your computer. So if the image is in the library but not on the computer you’re using, open it, download it, and then use the Custom Header Uploader to upload and crop it.

Okay, I’ve successfully changed my custom header once (to a photo I uploaded directly from my computer) — it worked perfectly! (And… amazingly, that first photo was not “exactly” the 780×120… I cropped it, thought “Whoa!!! Way too easy!” Oh, dear… how right I was! Now here I am, a few weeks later, and have uploaded the picture I’ve wanted to use 3-4 times, each time getting that cropping tool… (and yes, the photo’s too large for the 780×120, so it has needed to be cropped a bit. Once I click “crop”, then… my photo’s *gone* with the wind (or at least a cyber-wind), and…when I’ve gone to take a peek at my site, the background’s become entirely black — NOT good. What on earth can I do to get my photo out there like my first too-easy time? And what am I doing differently this time from a few weeks ago? Thanks for any help…

Don’t re-upload the same image. WordPress gets confused when you do that. Go to the file on your computer and rename it. Then crop it to size, either using your own image editing program or something online like Gimp or Picnick, THEN upload it.

Thank you so much, raincoaster! The night I posted my question (above) I was about to stop, but had to try one more time — and decided that maybe the image I’d wanted to use was far too big, so cropped it, re-named it, and…voila! It was a shot in the dark — though I hadn’t yet read your great advice. THANK you again for putting it out there so simply & clearly!

Hi I am new to this and trying to customize my header with my own image. A) using a MAC b) started with a wayyyyyy toooo big of a file that is a pdf. c) figured out that I had to make it smaller and changed the image to 780 x 120. C) tried again as a tif – but with the same name – seemed like it took the image as moved on to the crop page but my image did not appear. I see above that I have maybe try renaming it? is that what I am doing wrong? thanks much from Tornonto

    Hello there,
If you wish to keep the same theme you have now Kubrick then here’s some good news there is a header generator for it online that will create the correct size for you rounded corners and all. Then you can upload it here > Appearance > Custom Header
    http://bighugelabs.com/blogheader.php

P.S. Also forget the tif extension. It’s not an accepted file type here and neither is bmp. The following are:
    .jpg
    .jpeg
    .png
    .gif
