How to use the Widgets?

  • Unknown's avatar

Q1. How to use Category so that each item goes below each other?
It says Select Category and Uncategorised.
Which one should I choose below:
    __ Display as dropdown
    __ Show post count
    __ Show hierarchy

Q2. Follow Button (wordpress.com Follow Button)
It says You are Following this Blog (manage).
At first the word Follow was displayed but I went to click it – now I cannot bring it back on my Home page Sidebar.

Q3. How to add a widget area in the Footer of wordpress.com

Anyone can help will be appreciated on the above.

    Hello Sophia,
    Q1
I believe you would like to have the categories as a list, in which case you should uncheck‘Display as a dropdown’, because the categories would be displayed as a list by default.

Aside: You might also want to add/modify cateogires in the ‘Posts -> Categories’ section of your blog. There is also an option to post(s) to categories in ‘Posts’ -> ‘All Posts’ section. You may select multiple posts (using checkboxes) and assign a category to them by using ‘Bulk Actions’. Also, it is good practice to rename your ‘Uncategorized’ category.

    Q2
The reason why you don’t see the ‘Follow’ button is because you are following your blog with your credentials. :) Try this – log out of your WordPress.com account and visit your blog again. You’d be able to see the follow button now. :)

    Q3
The location of widgets depends upon the theme you use. Some widgets have a footer widget area. In case you want to add a footer to your blog, I’d suggest you to change your WordPress theme.

    Hope I’ve answered your queries.

    Happy Blogging!
    Hari.

    @ visionp,

I went to Appearance>Widget>Category>Customize on my 3 cookbooks and was trying to delete The Asian Chinese Cookbook in Post>Category…

It would be easier for volunteers such as harishankerr or myself to assist you if your site’s visibility wasn’t set to private. Did you mean Appearance>Widget>Categories>Customize
? There is no “Customize” option in a categories widget.

…and the Screen Options says I can convert
    Category to Tag.

I wasn’t able to duplicate this. Which theme are you using?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Correction: Did you mean Appearance>Widget>Categories>Customize?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello Harishankerr

Thank you for your email of 24 June 2015. In reply to you as follows.
A1. Yes, I uncheck ‘Display as a dropdown’.
Yes, I also post to Categories in Post – that is why I face the problem of The Asian Chinese Cookbook but the other 2 cookbooks were ok
In uncategorised I edit The Asian Chinese Cookbook and I read in the Option Screen that I can convert Category to a Tag .. so I try to do that and now I cannot remove it.

When I view in Post My Video The Asian Cookbook is tagged to this and I want to remove it as well as from the other 2 cookbooks

A2. I did as you direct log out and visit my blog again the word ‘manage is there’ instead of the word FOLLOW

A3. I am using Penscratch Theme and I can customize here. I cannot change theme because most of my contents have been done using this customizer- I have 10 pages of contents

    Hello musicdoc1

Thank you for your email of 25 June 2015. I am using Penscratch Theme where I do my customizer. I do from http://www.wordpress.com-admin Click Appearance>Widget>Category and then Customizer in order to Save and Publish.

Please read my email above to Harishhankerr dated 26 June 2015 and
    reply me.

Thank you for your attention and assistance.

    @ visionp,
    Hi,

I do from https://wordpress.com-admin Click Appearance>Widget>Category and then Customizer in order to Save and Publish.

Thanks. However, I still don’t follow (understand) the full path you give. “Appearance>Widget>Category” seems to indicate a category widget. If you make changes to the category widget, there is no reason to go to the “Customizer” to save and publish.

Yes, I also post to Categories in Post…

What do you mean by “post to Categories in Post?” This doesn’t make any sense to me.

In uncategorised I edit The Asian Chinese Cookbook and I read in the Option Screen that I can convert Category to a Tag .. so I try to do that and now I cannot remove it.

“Uncategorized” is a category, not a place, so it’s difficult to know what you’re referring to. I presume “The Asian Chinese Cookbook” is a post. I don’t know what you mean by the “Option Screen.” I’ve not found a link to the category to tag converter in the Screen Pptions drop-down menu at either Posts/All Posts, an individual post, or at the post categories page. A link to that converter will be found in your Import page, and at your Categories page https://specialasianfood.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category (which provides a link to the Import page rather than a direct link to the converter).

    Hello musicdoc1

Thank you for your email of 27 June 2015. To answer your questions.

A1. I have to go to Customizer because I am using Penscratch Theme Customizer.

A2. Harishankerr said I can also post Category in Post. In Post I saw under Name Uncategorized and I edit The Asian Chinese Cookbook (because in my Homepage the drop-down shows Uncategorized and Categorized) Ask Harishankerr what should I have edit under Name Uncategorized ?

A3. Sorry it is not the Option Screen but under Help which says Categories are like Table of Contents and Tags are like terms in the index. Note – Deleting a category does not delete posts in that category. Categories can be selectively converted to tags using the “category to tag converter” I must have clicked this. The Asian Chinese Cookbook has been converted to Tag – that is the reason it has been tagged to my video and the 2 cookbooks.

If you know how to remove the Tag The Asian Chinese Cookbook it will be appreciated. But do not do anything yet just give me the steps to do as I am waiting for wordpress.com to rectify it. If they cannot do then we will think of other ways or I can delete of my Homepage and do it again.

Thank you for your attention and assistance.

    @ visionp,
    Hi, Sophia

    1. I am using Penscratch Theme where I do my customizer. I do from https://wordpress.com-admin Click Appearance>Widget>Category and then Customizer in order to Save and Publish.

A1. I have to go to Customizer because I am using Penscratch Theme Customizer.

The path “Appearance>Widget>Category” does not appear in the Penscratch Customize page and does not lead to it. While you should be able to edit widgets at the Customize page, if you follow the path Appearance > Widgets > Category you’ll be at the category widget on the widgets page, and can edit it directly there.

    3. Re: removing post tags

Tags can be removed from a post at each individual post editor, or at Posts/All Posts (https://specialasianfood.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?) using the Quick Edit option for each post. Tags can be edited or deleted at the site’s post tags page: https://specialasianfood.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag.

I’ll tag the topic for staff attention.

  • Unknown's avatar

To your question regarding saving changes to a category widget (if I understand correctly), I answered, in part,

While you should be able to edit widgets at the Customize page, if you follow the path Appearance > Widgets > Category you’ll be at the category widget on the widgets page, and can edit it directly there.

In other words, you can’t edit a widget on one page and save it on another. On the widgets page, edits to each individual widget are saved on the widget itself.

    Hello musicdoc1

Thank you for your email of 28 June 2015 and I answer below.

A1. Yes, I did as you had mentioned – Appearance>Widget>Category (I edit and save here) before going to Customizer and saw it is already saved.

    A3. I went to wordpress.com – admin>Settings>Default Post Category>The Asian Chinese Cookbook – How do I remove this?
I read further and it says, a default category (uncategorized) will be assigned to published post if you don’t specify one. The default category can be changed under Settings>Writing in the Dashboard.
Under Writing>Settings>Post>Category (I do not understand this)
    Please assist me.

WordPress.com category conversion complete – email received today 28 June 2015 from WordPress.com as

    Hi Sophia,

I am going to go back to your original questions to make sure I understand what changes you are trying to make, and help you make those changes.

Q1. How to use Category so that each item goes below each other?

Right now, you only have one category, called “The Asian Chinese Cookbook.” If you want to have a list of categories in the Categories Widget, you will need to add more categories. You can add more categories by creating a new post (or editing a published post) and adding new categories in the editor.

Q2. Follow Button (wordpress.com Follow Button)
It says You are Following this Blog (manage).
At first the word Follow was displayed but I went to click it – now I cannot bring it back on my Home page Sidebar.

When you are already following your blog, you will see the words “You are Following this Blog (manage).” That lets you manage your subscription. However, anyone who is not following the blog will see the Follow button. Here is what I see when I visit your blog: https://cloudup.com/cpN6T_sJ8Gz

Q3. How to add a widget area in the Footer of wordpress.com

The Penscratch theme you are using only has a sidebar widget area. Some other themes have widget areas in the footer so you can add widgets there, but there isn’t a way to add a widget area in the footer with the Penscratch theme.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello Rachelmcr

Thank you very much for your email of 29 June 2015. To answer the three questions.
A1.Since Penscratch theme has only a Sidebar I will do my Widgets here.

A2. You are very clever to use http://cloudup.com/cpN6T_sJ8Gz – are you able to see my site?

A3. No Footer – I will use the Sidebar. I can also use in different pages.

Q4. I would like you to help me remove the Tag The Asian Chinese Cookbook in small print below each of the 3 cookbooks in the Sidebar and below the video. WordPress.com sent me this link
http://specialasianfood.worpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag to verify. So I click it and it opens to Tag page so I name it The Asian Chinese Cookbook and Delete it but I see in View Site it is still there. I go to Settings and see name The Asian Chinese Cookbook as Default Post Category. The Default Category is “Uncategorized” until you change it in your Writing Settings.

Setting the Default Category. A Default Category (Uncategorized) will be assigned to published post if you do not specify one. The Default Category can be changed under Settings>Writing in the Dashboard.
(The above is what I have read from the links given) I do not know how to do this.

Can you help me to remove the Tag The Asian Chinese Cookbook from the 3 cookbook.

I click Post and I see The Chinese Cookbook under All Categories and the Category to the right of Quick Edit even I untick it comes back with tick again after I have updated.

I am really exasperated – I think I have to delete both Home page and Post Video in order to remove The Asian Chinese Cookbook Tag if there is no solution because Bulk Delete it will remove whole page.

I appreciate your attention and assistance to the above.
    Thank you.

    Hi Sophia,

A2. You are very clever to use http://cloudup.com/cpN6T_sJ8Gz – are you able to see my site?

Yes, I am WordPress.com staff so I have access to your site so I can help troubleshoot any problems there. :)

Q4. I would like you to help me remove the Tag The Asian Chinese Cookbook in small print below each of the 3 cookbooks in the Sidebar and below the video.

The link to “The Asian Chinese Cookbook” is in the sidebar 3 times because you have the Categories Widget added to your sidebar 3 times. That is your site’s only category, so when you use the categories widget that will always appear.

If you want to show just the names of your cookbooks, without that link, you can delete those Categories widgets and add Text Widgets instead.

    Hello Rachelmcr

Thank you very much for your reply of 30 June 2015. You are indeed a genius!!

A4. I have changed the Categories widgets to Text Widgets and the Tag The Asian Chinese Cookbook has been removed. I am so grateful for your help.

Q1. How do I allow the space for each cookbook to be nearer to each other and how do I attach a small book image to each book as shown?

Q2. How do I link each of these cookbooks to my Cookbooks in the Menu?

Q3.Why does the Widget appear on every page of the Sidebar – do you think I should leave them as it is or only have the one on Home page and Video page?

Q4. I need to do the Table of Contents like the one in my website http://specialasianfood.com (click view menu page and you will see the sample page on Recipes Titles and also have the book image on the right-top corner)

I would appreciate your attention and assistance and reply. Thank you very much.

    Hi Sophia,

Q1. How do I allow the space for each cookbook to be nearer to each other and how do I attach a small book image to each book as shown?

I’d recommend that you look at all of the different Widgets that are available for your site, and try some of them out to see how they look. For example, you can use Image Widgets to display images in your sidebar.

Q2. How do I link each of these cookbooks to my Cookbooks in the Menu?

You can follow our guide to making Text Widget Links to add links to your text widgets.

Q3.Why does the Widget appear on every page of the Sidebar – do you think I should leave them as it is or only have the one on Home page and Video page?

By default, widgets display on every page where your sidebar appears. If you want to change that, you can change the widget visibility for each widget to make it only appear on certain pages. That’s up to you, depending on how you want it to look. :)

Q4. I need to do the Table of Contents like the one in my website http://specialasianfood.com (click view menu page and you will see the sample page on Recipes Titles and also have the book image on the right-top corner)

I see that Kathryn helped you with the table of contents in this forum thread:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/httpspecialasianfoodwordpresscom

Have you tried looking at some of the resources she mentioned there?

    Hello Rachelmcr

Thank you once again your email of 30 June 2015 and my reply to my questions.

Q1. I have decided not to use Image Widgets as I am not under Premium Plan.

Q2. Links>Text Widget Links – can I do in Page>Add New>Visual/Editor will show <a> Copy HTML code in the editor and paste it into a Text Widget. (From my Sidebar Cookbooks how do I link to Cookbooks in Menu)

I see in http://wordpress.com – admin there is also Links and All Links – I do not want all the Links like a Blogroll like the one in Appearance>Widget>Links Blogroll – can I just tick the wordpress.com one and would this work without the long list of Blogroll.

    Name: The Asian Chinese Cookbook
    Web Address: http://specialasianfood.wordpress.com
    Description: can leave blank
Categories: what do I type here
__ Blogroll – what do I do here
+Add New Category – what do I do here

Q4. I do not understand Kathryn’s email of Table of Contents. Is there an easier way of doing like the one in my old website?

I would appreciate your clarification on the above and assistance.
    Thank you.

    Sophia Lim

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Sophia,

Q1. I have decided not to use Image Widgets as I am not under Premium Plan.

You don’t need the Premium plan to use Image Widgets on your site. Please let me know if you have questions about that.

    Q2. Links>Text Widget Links – can I do in Page>Add New>Visual/Editor will show

To add a link to your text widgets, you can start by creating the link in the post or page editor.

Then, you can switch to the Text/HTML editor, copy the HTML code there, and paste it in your text widget.

The Links Widget and Links section in your dashboard are for creating blogrolls, so if you don’t want a blogroll you shouldn’t use that.

Q4. I do not understand Kathryn’s email of Table of Contents. Is there an easier way of doing like the one in my old website?

I don’t know of another way of setting up a table of contents the way that you want. I’d recommend following Kathryn’s advice at the end of that forum thread.
