How to verify I own a domain name
-
I think that I registered a domain name but am not sure. When I go to godaddy. com or domain.com and enter the name it says that it’s taken but I’m not sure if I’m the one who took it or not. This would’ve been 2 months ago. The name that is shown in domain.com is not mine but if I registered it I would’ve most likely chosen the privacy option.
When I log into my wordpress.com account it shows the name that I want. Does this mean that I registered the name already? Is it correct to assume that WordPress would not have allowed me to use the name for my site if it was taken already? I’m ready to start working on building it out but don’t want to do it on a name that’s not mine.
Also when I look under receipts under the ‘manage purchases’ tab in WordPress nothing is there. It may be possible that I purchased it elsewhere. I don’t know and can’t remember.
Thanks,
Stephanie

I believe so. When I check http://www.thevirtualgenie.com nothing is there. I’m hoping it’s because I’m the one who owns it.

thevirtualgenie.com is hosted by Weebly, not by wordpress.com

c.dns.gandi.net
b.dns.gandi.net -
Thanks, I guess that means that it was never mine. It’s weird because I checked that it was available when I set up my wordpress account. Apparently I never followed through on registration. Weird that wordpress would “let” me set it up if it was taken. Now I have to see if I can change the name of the wordpress.com account that I have.

You registered this site http://thevirtualgeniecom.wordpress.com/ and when domain mapping you do not have to register a matching domain URL.

re: changing a .wordpress.com address
We cannot edit any blog URLs. If you want to change the .wordpress.com blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so, then you can change the URL by using the guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/ Then all the content will be the same only the URLs will change and nothing else.Be sure to locate the correct page http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dashboard-e1371648470893.png
Changing a URL is meant to be a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and the only exceptions are made are for URLs that were deleted 2 or more years ago

Ok, thank you. I never wrote any pages, etc so it should be a simple process. I need to reread the instructions. Now it’s back to figuring out a name. Happy Thanksgiving :)
