How to view and comment on protected blogs?
-
Ok- I’m really pulling my hair out!! My daughter has created a blog, but in order to see it, wordpress.com says I can create just a user i.d., not a blog. I’m not finding this to be true. I created an i.d., and the screen went nowhere. Where can you search for the desired blog?? I’m her mother, and I know none of her other invitees will go through the hoops that I have been trying, in order to leave her comments. It has been most frustrating and difficult, I’m not nearly as excited as I was when I first researched blogs and chose wordpress. If no resolution comes, I will definately be in the market again! This has become the bane of my exsistence. Any help will be greatly appreciated and tried, before I pull the plug! thanks

after you create your user account, wordpress.com will send you a validation email.
after you click the validation email, your account will be set upt.
after your account is set up, your daughter will have to go to the ‘Users’ page of her dashboard, and at the bottom, add your email address as a user. then you can visit her blog, and comment.

I’m wondering if there isn’t a common theme in these two active threads and thought I post the other one for what it’s worth http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5137&replies=7

When you say “Where can you search for the desired blog??” do you mean your daughter hasn’t actually told you where her blog is or given you an invitation? If she hasn’t, you won’t be able to see it no matter what.
-
Well, I’m going to hve her check her blog and then see if I can get through… but when I set up my blog, as I didn’t seem able to do anything about it with just a name registration, I could not type in her blog name anywhere to leave the page about me. Does that make sense? I was stuck on the page for me, without a search bar to go to the proper wordpress blog for her. Thanks for all help!

Why do I get the feeling that, since you’re talking about search bars, you’re trying to type in your daughter’s URL into something like a Google’s toolbar or some such instead of the browser’s URL bar?
Which browser are you using?
Where is your daughter’s blog anyway? (If it’s protected, we can’t see it. Not even me. Staff can though.)

Hi drmike! I’m trying to search within the wordpress site. I got my daughter’s blog added to my blogroll after getting the invite from her, and still the page comes up- that even though I’m logged in, it is a private blog and I’ll have to speak to administration. Her blog is wordpress, and I guess my browser is Internet explorer. I didn’t think of typing her url in, other blog sites have search bars for that whole blog site.

Hi there.
The search bars located on the individual blogs are only for those specific blogs. For example, the search box on your blog is only for your blog. You can’t search any of my blogs with it. They are seperate.
Maybe if you mentioned specifics, we might be able to help you a bit more.
Your daughter is going to have to add you to her blog. She has to do that herself by adding in the email address that you used to create your account here. She does that at her Dashboard -> Users. I don’t think staff is going to be able to do anything on that but that’s really a policy question that they have to answer. (I’m not an employee and stay away from all policy issues so not to get in trouble.)
I’ll send in a feedback and point staff to this thread so that they can throw in their 2 cents. (Or in case of Mark, 2 pounds I guess.)

luvya2 – send a feedback with your details and those of your daughter.
But….. if someone here has a private blog then there is only 1 person who can add people – the blog owner. There is no way we would break that rule.
-
She had sent me the invite, that is what I used to get to wordpress and set up my blog. I don’t know how to be more specific? Newbies must stink for y’all….
-
If by sending a feedback, you mean contacting support, I will go fill that out now and send it in! THanks.

The invite is for coming to WordPress.com, not to a specific blog. At least it was the last time I saw one.
I don’t mind new users (I hate the nickname newbies). No, stop laughing. Really I don’t. :) It’s just when some folks come in here and tell us how they know everything and demand that we drop everything and demand an answer and don’t want to be pointed to a FAQ or docs or even the right website is what ticks me off.

She will be home from school here in a bit, and we’ll see if we can’t get it going on. I REALLY appreciate the help, as this place looked the best from the research I did and I don’t really want to go…. Sincerely, thanks for your patience and kindess! A new user, gaining experience every minute

Something new I learn everyday.

sunburntkamel: the advice your provided will work, but will actually make the person added a contributer.
Options > Privacy is where you add readers of a private blog. You enter a person’s WordPress.com username (not their email address).
Mike, I trust “…just when some folks come in here and tell us how…” was not applicable to this post, only expressing your general frustration.
Mike / nosysnoop: there is also now a check box to add the invited person as a contributor to the blog, but there is NOT currently a check box for allowing access to a private blogs.

only expressing your general frustration.
Yup. Sorry about that. Should have put a smiley face in there. I wrote that right after that lovely person we had a few days ago. :)
Last time I knew, we only had a limited number of invites? Are they unlimited now?
Thanks,
-drmike
