How too suppress immediately a file

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I have published a file in a article but I must now suppress the access to this file.
I have suppressed the file in the media library and supressed the article.
But people who receive the e-mail of the article can still open the file.
Please could you help me to prevent people to see this file?
    Thank you in advance.

You can’t, I’m sorry, but once the e-mail is sent it is out there in the hands of the recipient and not yours.

    Thank you for your answer.
Is the file inside the e-mail? Or is it still on the server?
Do you think that if I wait, the link to the file will not work?

  • Unknown's avatar

It is inside the e-mail and so unfortunately it will remain online as long as the email does.

    Thank you again.
Is there a way to send an message to WordPress about this?

@mathedoreille – I’ve tagged this for Staff assistance.

Even after you permanently delete the file from the Media Library, there’s a cache that we don’t have access to that hangs around for a while and the file can still be accessed if you have the direct link. Staff will be able to assist you with this.

    Hi there,

Just to clarify, if you created a post with a link to a file in your media library, and you later deleted that file from your media library, people who received an email about that post won’t have access to that file anymore. They have to click a link in the email to the file hosted on the WordPress.com servers, and deleting the file from your media library removes it from those servers. The file itself wasn’t emailed directly to your subscribers.

However, as justjennifer mentioned, files are cached on multiple WordPress.com servers and so it can take some time for deleted files to be removed completely from all WordPress.com servers. If you give me a link to a file that you deleted but can still access, I can check to make sure it was deleted properly.

    Hi Rachel,
Thank you very much. I understand.
The link is : [Redacted by staff]

    Hi there,

Thanks! I checked that file and it is already removed from all of the WordPress.com servers. When I visit that link I get the message “404 — File not found.”

If you can still see the file at that link, you may need to refresh your browser or clear your browser’s cache. That’s because the file can also be saved or cached on your own computer if you visited the link before.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thank you so much! I can see that everything is ok!
