How WIill Images & Tags Be Affected When Moving From WordPress.com to Self Hoste

I want to move my WordPress.com blogs to a self hosted solution. I know how that’s down… exporting the WordPress.com posts, installing WordPress.org on the self hosted server and customizing and re-pointing the DNS servers.

But, I haven’t found any discussion on how images which were uploaded to WordPress.com would be transferred? Does anyone have experience with this? How can I get my images to move with me?

Also, does anyone know what happens to what I think are WordPress.com specific tags, like [youtube=] [digg=]… Would I need to reformat those, or will they work on a WordPress.org solution?

The images don’t move as far as I know; essentially the new blog hotlinks to the old files at Wp.com. If you take your WP.com blog private or delete it, all those images vanish.

You will need to reformat all the shortcodes like the YouTube ones, etc.

And your tags will be solely local; you will be excluded from the WP.com global tag and category pages.

Thanks Raincoaster, that’s a bummer about images not moving. I hope someone has a work around, I’d like to keep my images ‘in-house’ for load times and just in case WordPress.com goes down (unlikely, but I don’t want to take the chance). I wish WordPress.com would allow access to the images.

You can always take them down and re-upload them somewhere else. If you look at your code, you’ll see that every image has a unique URL and as far as I’m aware, there’s no way to automatically import all your images, assign them unique URLs at the new site, and replace the old ones in all your posts.

You’re right, I could do it manually. I’ve got lots of images. My URL won’t necessarily change, as I’d also transfer my domain from wordpress.com to my self hosted site. It’s just the one by one downloading which will be a pain. I’ve got a pretty deep and large archive of posts — almost each have at least 1 image, if not more.

The URL of all your images always includes .wordpress.com for some reason. Staff told me that a few months ago.
