How will closing my account affect co-admin sites

  • Unknown's avatar

I am attempting to remove myself from a project with people I no longer want to work with. I am an admin on 4 different wordpress sites with them, where we are all admin.

It’s pretty silly that as an admin, I can go in and remove any of *them* if I want, but cannot remove myself.

Asking them to do it is a hard no.

If I close my account, effectively removing myself from all the sites I co-admin, does it leave those sites otherwise unaffected?

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

I wouldn’t recommend closing your account as this will close the sites also.

If you created the sites initially, you would need to transfer ownership of the site as per these instructions here: https://wordpress.com/support/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

    I hope this helps.

Thank you – I am not the owner of any of the sites – the owner made me an admin at one point. I was wondering if, *as an admin* if it would negatively impact those sites.

  • @aimelilithe so just to confirm, are these Jetpack-connected sites, or sites that are hosted here on our services?

If they’re hosted here and you’re not the owner, removing yourself will make no difference.

If they’re Jetpack sites, we’d want to double check with the Jetpack team to be certain, but I think if someone else will connect themselves you should be okay to jump off. Juste note closing the WordPress.com account won’t actually remove the accounts that are on those individual sites.

They are all Jetpack connected – yes!

@supernovia – ah – it won’t remove me from those sites – which is what I am wanting to accomplish.

Given I can’t use my email for 30 days to start up a new account, I will likely have to find another route.

    Thank you for that bit!

  • Hi there,

The best way is to disconnect those sites from your account by following these instructions:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/disconnect-jetpack-sites/

And then tell the other administrator of those sites to reconnect them again on their WordPress.com account.

Hi, I can’t do that. I need to reiterate that I am not able to be in contact with the owners of the sites to let them know they need to reconnect Jetpack.

Plus, my making such a change would cause incredible problems for them, as they are dealing with severe disabilities that making such a change would have literal health repercussion that I do not wish to cause.

I can’t quite understand why WordPress has it set up like this.

I should be able to have more agency over where my information is being connected and not have to rely on others for me to extricate myself from a difficult situation without causing damage to their intellectual property that would have a resulting health impact on them.

  • Hi there,

I understand your concerns, but I wanted to explain that the reason we are not able to assist you in removing you as admin on those sites is because we do not have any control over sites hosted with other providers such as Dreamhost.

To clarify, we are not the only providers of WordPress sites, and Dreamhost also happens to offer WordPress sites, but they use a different version of the platform than what we use here. Because of this we are not able to help with removing you as an admin on those sites. See http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for more info.

What we can help with is the Jetpack connection on each of the sites. Jetpack is a plugin that adds functionality you would normally find on WordPress.com sites (we build a lot of stuff into our version that is not in the self-hosted version of WordPress) and the way the plugin functions is that it needs to be connected to a WordPress.com account.

It would be possible for us to help with breaking the Jetpack connection on each of your sites, but you should be aware of the following:

    • sites previously connected to Jetpack will lose site stats, as well as all the features listed here: https://jetpack.com/support/features/
    • The current admins on the site will likely not understand why these features have been lost, so that will likely cause some confusion (and why we like to hand off the connection)
    • Breaking the jetpack connection will NOT remove you as an admin on the site itself. Self-hosted sites use a different login system than we offer on WordPress.com so we are not able (and do not have the power) to remove you in that way.

With all that in mind, do you wish to remove the Jetpack connection on your sites without informing the current admins? Thanks for confirming.
