Howdy! How may we help?
-
Is it just me or is this popup in the corner of the screen (possibly only for paying users) irritating? I have dismissed it at least 35 times today. We can ask if we need help. Have a Help link and leave it at that!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Hi David,
No it’s not just your blog. It’s mine and others too. We cannot eliminate the pop-up. I just ignore it. -
Thanks! WP certainly knows how to irritate. It’s not as if they are normally that attentive.
-
Actually, I’ve seen a couple of users comment that they find this “Howdy!” pop-up irritating rather than helpful, so I’m going to tag this for Staff input.
Maybe a “time-out” of some sort before the pop-up appears again is in order (longer that 15 minutes).
-
I’ve noticed it off and on, but instead of finding it irritating, I’ve benefited from the almost instant responses to my WP issue questions. Instead of waiting for answers from overworked volunteers, which can take hours or even days, I’ve had gotten help within minutes. I guess it’s just a personal preference, but I like the chat feature.
-
I have not used it because (1) I have not had any questions to ask and because if I did (2) typing into a tiny box would be too visually challenging for me. I prefer to use the “Contact Support” form.
-
@ifmomsaysok – It’s not the chat feature itself that is bad-it’s lovely that they’re rolling it out to more users. It’s the persistence! If you don’t want or need to use it, you can’t seem to get rid of it.

Exactly and that’s why I have programmed myself to ignore it.

https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/disabling-the-howdy-how-can-we-help-popup?replies=6I tried clicking the “x” but it doesn’t help because the next time I load a another page it’s back.

I can definitely understand how it could be annoying, then again there are so many other things that, to me, are worse. I can’t get too work up about it. :)
-
@tt-from time to time I’ve seen the chat feature available in the Contact Support form as well. :)
I don’t think this thread is really about discussing the virtues of the new chat feature, because, hey, we’d all like instant replies, but not everyone wants the pop-up box to be omnipresent in our Dashboard.
-
-
@tt- That’s why I suggested some kind of lengthy time-out if a user clicks the X button on the pop-up.
-
Thanks for the feedback on the live chat box. We’re definitely looking into how we can best display the chat box so that users who want to contact us via live chat can use it, but it won’t annoy those that don’t.
-
My two cents about this: I have used once the “irritant” pop-up. My query (and my problem) was answered in minutes.
More faster than the contact form. -

@jeremeylduvall
It would be cool if we could disable it or if justjennifer’s suggestion were acted on. However, like ifmomsaysok said above I don’t get worked up about it as there are other things, that to me, are so much worse. -
And YES, one does get fast responses. Not trying to be churlish. But I literally end up flicking the offer away 30 times in a long session. It seems to have gotten worse.
-
Also, we get “attention” via this mechanism, but what is the quality of attention? How high do more serious criticisms and suggestions travel up the WP ladder? There is a lot of evidence by now that WP regards customer relations as a pacifying, or defensive, operation, rather than the place where real discussion occurs.
-
And by the way, on the main subject of the thread, now (not before) EVERY save operation of a draft brings the popup.
This is ridiculous.
Jeremy — are you still reading this?

Hi @davidderrick,
Yep – still reading!

I can assure you that discussions that happen over Live Chat carry the same weight and are handled with the same care as any other form of support.
And by the way, on the main subject of the thread, now (not before) EVERY save operation of a draft brings the popup.
Just to clarify, is this on the Classic Dashboard (wp-admin), the new post editor at wordpress.com/post, or both?
