HTML editing pane jumps around as I type!

  • Unknown's avatar

    When I switch to the HTML view for editing my text in a post, every stroke of the cursor sends the window jumping back to the top of the text and then back to my current selection. Even if I’m twenty or thirty lines, down, I do something like deleting a space and bam, the window jumps back to a section of text I’m not editing. If I keep typing, it keeps entering text where I want it, but the view jumps and jitters up and down between the start and the end like a maddened pogo stick – I can’t even SEE what I’m typing. WTH? Is this a known issue?

    We need a link to the blog please, and what browser and browser version are you using?

    Same problem here. We use IE 8.0 and the blog is http://www.bn9time.wordpress.com

    This issue has been going on for two years, all the way back to IE 5, so it’s not browser related. If it matters, we access via high-speed turbo.

    I opened an older post that is long, switched to HTML tab, went down toward the bottom and added and took out text in several locations and I cannot reproduce what you describe

    Windows XP SP3 (fully updated)
    * IE8 no jumping around
    * Firefox 3.0.10 no jumping around
    * Chrome no jumping around
    * Safari 3.2.3 no jumping around

    Mac 10.5.7 (fully updated)
    * Safari 3.2.3 no jumping around
    * SeaMonkey no jumping around
    * Flock no jumping around
    * Firefox 3.0.10 no jumping around
    * Opera 9 no jumping around

    Well, that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
    Windows XP, SP3 (fully updated), IE8 as well.
    The jumping around happens in coding mode.
    Now, the x factor here might be that we run one of the most overly-aggressive AV/Firewall programs on the planet, Vipre by Sunbelt Software. However, all sites and paths necessary have been set as exceptions, so I doubt that’s the issue.

    While I thank you for running the various platform checks above (very helpful fellow member!), I can tell you this behavior does exist – every single time. Further, I would hazzard a guess this happens to many in the community here- but folks on the free (dot com) version don’t tend to mess with coding, so they’re unaware of it.

    It really is a bug.

    But because it doesn’t exist on WP dot org… support is a bit less interested in fixing it.

    I don’t know what to tell you. I even fired up my old XP machine that still has IE7 on it, and it doesn’t hop around either.

    If I am not having the issues, and you are, and our systems are seemingly identical, then the problem is somewhere in your setup, and it could very well be the firewall issue.

    My suggestion is to try things from outside your system on a different computer running IE8 and see what happens.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I tell you, if you *could* duplicate this behavior, you would absolutely find it to be one of the most maddening things you’ve ever encountered. It’s next to impossible to not key in mistakes, since you can never really see the line you’re typing; the dialogue constantly jumps back up to the top of the code each time you enter a keystroke, as the original post here explained.

    I can understand that, and since I seldom use Windows anymore, I wanted to see if I could reproduce it. Sadly – or maybe fortunately – I could not.

    I am sure that if this was a bug here, it would have shown up in the forums before now. I personally know of at least two people on XP using IE8 who do all their posts in the HTML editor and seldom use the visual for anything, and neither of them have mentioned anything.

    Whatever the problem, I’m hoping it can be tracked down.

    bn9time, I am VASTLY reassured to know that I’m not crazy and this is a known (at least to users) issue. I run XP sp3 and have both IE8 and FF 3.0.10.

    By today’s tests, the issue appears ONLY on IE8. The Firefox window is unaffected. Could that be a workaround for you?

    This is our corporate blog and I post from work, so I have no control over (or access to) firewall settings and the like.

    Appreciate the feedback!
