HTML novice very frustrated please help!!
-
Hi there,
This is my blog: alexandjohn.wordpress.com
I am horribly new to HTML, so bear with me. I’m not example sure why I’m using the tags I am, but I came to them by switching between the HTML and Visual editors and then taking it from there.
I’m using the Ambiru template, but I wanted Book Antiqua font through most of the pages, so I’ve used the <span style> tag to change it. For example, if you look at the “Ceremony” page, here’s part of the HTML for that page:
<span style=”font-size:20px;font-family:book antiqua;”>Sage Chapel</span></span>
<span style=”font-size:15px;font-family:book antiqua;color:#000000;”>Cornell University
Ithaca, New York
</span><span style=”font-size:15px;font-family:book antiqua;color:#000000;”>Our ceremony will start at four o’clock. Hope to see you there, throwin’ rice (and beans).
Now again, I may be doing 10x the work I could be doing to achieve the same effect, but I don’t really understand HTML.
Here’s my problem: when I try to do the same thing on the Registry page, every time I try to “update/save” the page, the computer/browser/??? CHANGES what I’ve typed so that often, there aren’t even any </span> tags anymore. I am doing to SAME thing I did the get the book antiqua on the other pages, does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? I’ve reset my browser, tried another one, all that…I just can’t figure it out. I thought at first that if my HTML was “wrong” or something that the update might not keep what I had written, but this can’t be true if it’s worked for the other pages. I’ve delete the page and re-written it, too. Does this have something to do with CSS (another thing I know little about). Thanks! -

However this may also have to do with bad use of html, especially since you’re using multiple tags as well as links. I switched my test blog to Ambiru, and had no problem changing font, size etc.
A couple of remarks:
– “span” is for any text segment, including words or phrases WITHIN a paragraph; “p” for single complete paragraphs, “div” for sections.
– Color, size and font are all elements of “style”: when you want to change the SAME text chunk, you complicate things unnecessarily if you use separate tags, and you may easily lose track of opening and closing tags.If you tell us exactly how you want each line of your text, I can give you a better version of the coding.
