HTML pop-up?

Hi, I’m wondering if there’s a way to add an HTML or javascript-type popup window. NOT an auto-popup for advertising or other silliness, but simply a smaller window that opens where I can put some custom HTML. I know about Scribd and Slideshare, those seem to be for images and documents files.

For instance, the image gallery on this post from my website works beautifully: http://jonahewell.com/2013/06/18/new-central-location-for-herbs/

If we could have some sort of feature like this that would allow some custom HTML, that would be the bee’s knees.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

WordPress.com is a type of shared environment, where all users are running off of the same software. This is great because it allows us at Automattic to update millions of blogs at the same time with a single click. It means we can fix bugs or offer new features very quickly, which is a win for you as users. Having all users running on the same software can also be dangerous. If we aren’t careful, one user has the potential to take down the entire site. So this is why we need to limit some of the things you post on your blog.

As an example, we don’t allow JavaScript, Flash, iframe, form, and input tags for security reasons. Anything that would allow a HTML/JavaScript pop-up window would also not be allowed under this policy. You can read more about this here:

    I hope that clarifies things!

For sure, I understand the reasoning and I do appreciate it. But I also know that people hosting their own sites using wordpress can use plugins, and that sometimes wordpress.com will replicate the functionality of these plugins using their own software. So, I guess what I’m asking is, is there any such type of software or is it being considered?

For instance, the image gallery at this post on my site: http://jonahewell.com/2013/06/18/new-central-location-for-herbs/

–is great! It’s not a “pop-up” per se but it does pop up and display content. The content I would like to display is more text-based. I guess I could make it into an image but then I wouldn’t be able to insert links.

Thanks for your reply. Any workarounds or fix suggestions are appreciated.

Yes, that’s the Carousel feature from the Jetpack plugin – which brings the Gallery feature from WordPress.com to self-hosted WordPress.org sites.

On WordPress.com, that feature is called a Gallery. This page explains more about the Gallery and how to set one up on your WordPress.com site:

We don’t have anything comparable for displaying text content at this time. I’ve made a note of your suggestion and will keep it in mind for future features and updates!

Also, don’t forget the ideas forum, where you can discuss your suggestion with the WordPress.com community: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ideas

    I hope that clarifies things!
