HTML problems
-
I keep trying pieces of HTML on my blog ( under ME>>>there is an experimental page that says IGNORE THIS) I have been trying to put any colour behind the text (just trying to learn) but not only does it not work but the code is lost when I go back to edit. I did get the big blue background someone kindly sent me the code for (which worked) but when I tried to pick a colour of my own eg #AEFFFF and put it the place of the bit that says ‘background colour blue’ nothing happens. I would be really grateful if some-one could just spell the code out. And whatever is put at the end after the text. I DO try to help myself. I see a whole lot of different ways of doing the colour reference but I don’t see any specific reference for which to use or why. It is a jungle! Well I am lost in it anyway!
Be grateful for help as usual! -

At last I got it to work. I had actually tried that very page on wordtips but I guess I did something wrong!
If for example I wanted to write something and put it in a colour panel could I shift the whole thing eg a bit to the right…would it remain together?
I am joyous to see it work at all after so many tries from various sites.
Thanks -
Surely if I paste one of the examples from w3schools css it should work on a page when I try it…I have tried three or more and all lose some of their code on being tried and do nothing other than deposit a bit of text.
Why is that?
It looks perfect for examples but they don’t seem to work??? -
Because you need to review the accepted kinds of code for WordPress.com blogs. We have security restrictions here.
-
Then HOW do I know (when I am refered to that site by people from here) what to put instead ….all I have from Help is a list of abbreviations, not HOW they fit in.
I was only copying simplest things. I feel like monkey trying to play Beethoven by accident! -
@Julia
The way we all learned was by trial and error. There was no manual. There was 1 thread with FAQs, a single Moderator, and a single Staff member here at wp.com — that was all. Everything that you see now in support documemnataion was derived from our experience and forum postings. I suggest that you get a test blog and play in it. That’s what I have done for nearly 5 years now. :) -
OOPS! I forgot to post this for you.
WordPress.com allows the following HTML code in your posts, pages, and widgets: > http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/#html-tags
-
Well, I have already been playing on a test page (surely good enough) but it is so time consuming not being able to find the rules!
Yes, I have copied that page with the bits of code allowed already…but they don’t tell you where to stick them!
You can tell I am exasperated!
Anyway thanks. Maybe I just give up.
I mean is there any difference between the Draft situation and the Publish situation regarding whether the code works?
I am thinking about how images/galleries are best entered after you have entered whatever and pressed Draft (once or twice it said somewhere).
OK at least I know that you all floundered too. But WHY with such a huge organisation can’t they facillitate the application of HTML to those using the blogs? If it is limited in use on the .com …then they should spell out what you can and can’t do. I can see why Panos did his WordTips (for which I can see hundreds of people must be grateful)…unfortunately he doesn’t seemed to have covered HTML a lot except for a background example, which is now hugged to me! It worked.
As I say I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. Thanks a lot every time. -
I should revise that a bit…I can see that Panos has done a lot on text wrapping etc but I am thinking more about boxes of colour, page packgrounds possibly, just ways of enlivening pages. I guess I don’t like to be defeated, on principle.
-
You can start with my posts on backgrounds and borders.
For a master of “boxes of colour” and “ways of enlivening pages”, check Tess’s blog:

Learning code is like learning a language. You have to set aside the time to learn it. It was two years before I bothered even trying.
That is why WordPress.com encourages people to just get blogging, and offers over 100 nicely designed themes: so people can forget about becoming code wizards or graphic designers and can just get blogging.

Yes, thanks all of you. Of course it is brilliant to be able to do as much as I have without recourse to code. I guess I don’t really need it …but it is a challenge …a kind of amazing magic that temps one on… even though life is short!
I will have a look at 1tess and you again Panos. I will keep quiet as long as I can!
Cheers and thanks again all, Julia -
It’s great that you are interested in using some html to make your blog look the way you want it to! And don’t be shy about asking questions.
If you have specific code you need help with, then post here in the forums so we can see exactly what you are doing. To do that, post your code between backticks. The backtick is on the same key as the tilde ~ next to the 1 / ! key, top left.
backtick YOUR_CODE backtick(the backtick is also illustrated here below the comment box—looks like a backward apostrophe)

1tess, I have been looking at your lovely blog …full of beautiful food…delicious! How do I know what can be done on my own theme Twenty Ten? I can see you have handled all the boxes and colours etc wonderfully well. If I were a genius could I do something like that on one of my theme pages? Or are you using an upgrade. And, while I am back (already!) I notice on various sites showing examples of code they start stating Doctype HTML etc …is this something one can ignore in WP because it is already established? I think they way these examples are shown are for people creating their own site as oposed to moving within one already created.
I have noted the back tick! Thanks. -
Doctype is part of the header and done for you.
One other problem with copy and paste code is that the copy can also bring along formatting information that messes up what you want to do. I always paste into a plain text editor to make sure the formatting junk is thrown away – and if junk comes along then I can just get rid of it. I use Notepad++ but plain old Notepad that is on any Windows based PC will also work.
W3 is a good resource as is http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/ which is WordPress specific.

OK I have (thank you Panos) managed to make borders work (small triumphs!).
On my ME >>>IGNORE THIS experimental page I tried several but they seem to want to butt up to one another. I kept moving the type down, but it didn’t want to know! Does one need to code some space between each box (supposing one is using more than one? -
Panos if you actually see this…I would like to say I have totally underestimated WordTips which is brilliant. I think I was flailing around so haphazardly to many different websites that I didn’t see what was in front of me. You have done a brilliant job (and should have been paid for it!). I can see that it is all there if I concentrate. Also one of the things I can see is other people talking about losing code when they switch between Visual and HTML…in fact I found moving text in HTML seemed to slip back when one checked visual. Panos I owe you an extra thankyou for not seeing immediately how good WordTips was (in fact I didn’t even realise it was Yours at first).
And All of you thanks for your time. Your persistent student, Julia -
You’re welcome, thanks, etc etc…
Re your 7:45 PM post, to create space between a bordered div and the next, you need to add margins. For example, change this:
<div style="border:6px [etc.]
to this:
<div style="margin-bottom:18px;border:6px [etc.]Can be margin-bottom, or margin-top, or both:
<div style="margin-top:18px;margin-bottom:24px;border:6px [etc.]If you want the same amount of extra space above and below, you can write this:
<div style="margin:18px 0;border:6px [etc.]
(First margin number means top and bottom, second number means left and right.) -
