html star icon not showing properly on my screen
-
Funnily enough, it shows okay on my office PC but not on my home PC. Instead, I get a hollow square with the numbers ’26’ and ’05’ contained within it. Is this simply a case of my graphics card being ‘out-of-date’ (it’s almost five years since I purchased my PC) or is it something else?
Cheers.

What you’re describing sounds to me like something that happens when the font you are using does not support all unicode characters. Hard to say without seeing an example though. Can you point is to exactly where you see that?

timethief:
it is not an image, but a unicode problem. Maybe similar to the straight vs curved quotation marks problem. I can’t reproduce the problem but I’m on macs only.

I guess what I mean is that perhaps it is a problem with the Visual Editor and how it works with different operating systems???
The straight quotes remain as long as you do not switch to the Visual Editor which converts them to curly in one direction. There are other flukes with switching between Visual Editor and html editor as well…
Could be this is one??? Maybe different versions of the PC operating systems?

Ah … 0kay. Then I wonder why bother mucking about with this? If the blogger is the one giving out the stars not the readers, why not create 5 images of 1 – 5 stars, upload them to the Media Library, and insert the correct image with the appropriate number of stars into the posts ? That’s what I would do.

I’m in migraine mode here, but is there not a widget or some sort of rating star system available for wp.com? Sorry, I’m a bit flakey

Hi all,
Thanks for your insights.
I guess I prefer using the html code over an image because it’s ‘cleaner’ (I’m currently having problems with background images that’s driving me nuts!).
Both PCs operate on Windows XP version 3, so it’s definitely not the operating system. However, I’ll look into the straight vs curved quotation marks problem and get back to you.

Here are a couple examples of what’s showing on my home PC. Please let me know if they turn out the way as I described earlier:

I’ve just compared the quotation marks in this code to other html codes I use throughout the blog and they are exactly the same (and they work fine): straight.
-
Good as long as you do not switch to the Visual editor prior to publishing then they won’t become “curly” quotes.

From experience, I try to avoid the visual editor – it just messes up the html coding. I usually stick with the html tab, save changes and then look at the post to check that everything went according to plan.

Btw, I simply copied and pasted the icons. So, I’m beginning to seriously think this is a graphics card issue. I really can’t think of any other explanation…

Whatever it is, the goal is to get what you want to appear on your posts.
Another fluke I encounter all the time is with fractions. It used to be that I could type
& frac12 ; (without the spaces) and it would appear in the post as a nice looking professional fraction. The odd thing is that for the last couple/few months, it shows the code unless I switch to visual mode before updating!!!Then I can copy and past the fractions already formatted with no problem.
