HTML Tags when Editing Comments
-
A few days ago, I was able to edit one of my own comments using the Classic comment editor without making it lose the HTML colors, horizontal line, headings, etc., and I did the same for several other comments. But when I tried to do it again today on one of my own comments using the same editor, it wiped out most of the HTML effects except for bold. Do you have any idea what is up with that? Thanks.

Hello there,
Many thanks for reaching out.
What is the comment you were editing exactly? Also, to check were you editing these via WordPress.com > comments or via the front of the website?
Many thanks in advance.

One comment that I edited several days ago was this one: https://andynwof.wordpress.com/2022/10/06/wof-recap-october-6-2022-placeholder/comment-page-1/#comment-31812
When I edited the comment to add in the HTML colors and horizontal lines via the comment editor in the Admin Dashboard, Classic View, it kept all the HTML tags in the comment.
Just yesterday, when I edited one of my own comments that previously had HTML colors using the same editor in order to fix a mistake, it wiped out the colors in the comment and I had to delete that comment and make a new one. Here’s the link to the post with my comment: https://andynwof.wordpress.com/2022/10/11/wof-recap-october-11-2022/

Hello there,
Many thanks for that additional information.
Did you edit those via this panel here: https://andynwof.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php ?
Many thanks.

Hi there,
I wanted to see if you have you made any additional attempts to edit any of your comments with the same result of wiped HTML? I want to confirm that this wasn’t an isolated incident as well as wanting to see if I can replicate the issue on our end.
I see the other comment where the HTML stayed intact. can you provide the link to the comment with the wiped HTML?
Also, you used the same editor for both – were there any differences that you can think of between the two edits? Did you use different browsers? Add any extensions before the most recent edit? Anything that you can note would be helpful.
Thanks!

I just tried that on one of my comments and this time it kept all HTML tags. It appears that sometimes the Classic comment editor wipes out most HTML tags, other times it keeps them. I already deleted the comment with the wiped HTML, but I can provide another comment that was made by someone else: https://andynwof.wordpress.com/2020/11/06/wof-recap-november-6-2020/comment-page-1/#comment-16035
I used Chrome, and no extensions were involved.

Hi there,
I’m curious if you can tell us a bit more about the edits you are making to see if there is a clue there perhaps. When you edit an existing comment with HTML formatting already added to it, are you making a small change (like correcting a spelling error) or making a large change like editing the formatting, adding formatting, or something else?
If you can walk us through your editing process a bit we’d like to use that as a guide to retrace your steps as we try to replicate this issue.
Thanks for the additional info!

Last night I posted a comment on this post: https://andynwof.wordpress.com/2022/10/11/wof-recap-october-11-2022/ and realized that I accidentally repeated a phrase (“in the Mystery Round”) near the end of my comment. What I did was that I clicked the “My Sites” button at the top left of each WordPress site, clicked “Comments” on the left pane, switched to Classic View, located the comment that I wanted to edit, and then removed that duplicate phrase. However, it also removed the HTML colors in the comment, which I didn’t expect for it to do, and I had to delete that comment and repost it.
Earlier today, I tested the horizontal line HTML tag on one of my other comments in that same post using the same comment editor, but it actually keeps the horizontal line after the comment was edited. I’m starting to wonder if it has to do with the time of day or something. Here’s the link to my other comment: https://andynwof.wordpress.com/2022/10/11/wof-recap-october-11-2022/comment-page-1/#comment-31884

I wasn’t able to replicate that on a test site of mine. When I edit a comment both in the Default and Classic view, all the HTML formatting is preserved.
Please let us know if this happens again, and we’ll investigate further.
