HTTP error 500, Page is not working
-
I am actually writing in regards to both of the blogs I have through WordPress. I have not changed anything in either for close to two weeks, but for no apparent reason, today when I typed in the address of each, I received the same message: kegarvey.com page is not working, the site cannot handle the request, http error 500
I have tried to look up fixes online, but they are either sites that want to charge me $189 (or more) to fix it, or the instructions are too complicated to understand. Most blame plugins, but I haven’t installed any as I use the free version and it isn’t allowed. I don’t want to pay to fix something I didn’t break.
Has anyone ever experienced this before? How did you handle it?

I just had this exact error. My hosting company solved it for me by renaming the plugins folder – via FTP or they did it via the cloud hosting. I can now login.
Next I need to add each plugin back in, one at a time to find out which one caused the issue. I suspect one of them flipped out for some reason.

Thank you for writing with your solution. While I waited for WordPress to get back to me, I decided to try opening the site from my second computer, which uses Firefox instead of Chrome. They both opened perfectly. So I changed my search criteria in Google and came across a forum where someone said that if it will open in one browser but not another, it is usually an issue with the browser and not WordPress or plugins (which was mostly what I was reading, as you suggested). I deleted my browser history, cache, etc. from Chrome’s ‘more tools’ tab and then tried to open the website and it opened without issue.
Your suggestion seems to be the most popular and widely used from what I have read, and maybe my issue was different than what others were writing in about, but my fix turned out to be simple. Thank God, I couldn’t figure out how to deactivate my plugins and add them back!
Thank you again for being so helpful. :)

No worries – glad you found a solution. I tried Safari and Chrome and private browsing – which should disable history. Didn’t try Firefox this time round.

*Update – I just tried to open one of my web pages again and received the same message as I did last night. I went back into tools and deleted my history and other items suggested and when I tried again, it opened.
Would you happen to have any idea what could possibly be in my browsing history, cache and such (within the last few hours) that would keep it from opening? Seems my fix wasn’t so easy after all.
