HTTP Error 500 when Customizing Theme
-
Hello,
I recently installed WordPress on a friend’s website. I completed everything as I normally would, and everything seemed to be working properly.
However when I try to customize ANY theme, I receive the below error:
This page isn’t working
websitename.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500This specifically affects the “Customize” and “Header” subcategories under “Appearance” on the default 2017 theme. On custom themes, additional subcategories such as “Background” are also affected.
Please advise what might be causing this issue.

Hello dtgpost!
It sounds like it is a self-hosted WordPress, so you may want to look into the forums of https://wordpress.org/support
Information about the differences can be found here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/Unfortunately, since I can not see the environment, there is very little to go on, I think the two quick things I would do to try and resolve the issue would be possible look at the .htaccess of the installation directory, maybe even rename and recreate it for WordPress:
https://codex.wordpress.org/htaccessif that fails, rename plugin folder and try,
http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-wp-admin/Also check which version of php you are using…
There are actually so many things it could be, maybe just permissions on certain files.
Goodluck, I hope I at least pointed you in the right direction.
