http error uploading video
-
I upgraded to Premium on WordPress.com over a year ago and ever since I have been getting “http error” message when uploading video or large image files. I am not over my individual upload limit or even close (we’re talking a max of maybe 45MB here). Never had this issue before I upgraded to Premium and changed my theme to “Twenty Ten”. Also upgraded to Windows10 sometime in this period. Upload does not work whether simply adding video to the library or using the VideoPress function. If I’m using VideoPress the error message is “1 file could not be uploaded because an error occurred while uploading” rather than “http error”. Error occurs on both Chrome and Firefox browsers. The only way I have discovered to upload successfully is to drag out my old Windows XP laptop and upload only .mp4 files.
Has anyone had this issue and solved it?

Hi @allifarkasartist, almost every time we see this error, it’s related to temporary instability of the internet connection: while you might not notice packet loss while browsing the web, it become more apparent when you’re uploading larger files like videos.
It sounds like you’ve been having this all year though. During that time have you tried another internet connection, and do you have the same issue there?

Thanks for your input. I do have a notoriously ” sketchy” internet service and get dumped offline quite often. I called them and we made some changes to the router/modem and connectivity seems to be much improved. Haven’t tried an upload yet but am hoping for a better experience! I can’t answer your question about trying other connections because I had so much trouble I rarely uploaded video files to WordPress at all (I only experienced difficulty with WordPress–other sites like Facebook uploaded video with no issues). If this time around doesn’t work I will wait till I get to a location with excellent net service and try from there.

@allifarkasartist yeah that sounds right. And I do know how that goes… I had an ISP like that once. It turned out to be an issue with the line going to my house.
One other thing you can try: some browsers are better able to handle an unstable connection (they handle the checksum differently, etc.) You might try Firefox to see if that helps at all.

Oh and @allifarkasartist, if it helps at all, I had some instability with my current ISP as well, and troubleshot that for months. We finally realized the router didn’t like my dashes in my Wifi password. Modems and routers can be a bit odd. Hopefully your ISP can help you sort it out so you have a better internet experience all around!

Tried both Firefox and Chrome before I dragged out the XP laptop. Same issue. So probably not the browser. I won’t use “Exploder”–LOL. As for the ISP, I never had an issue until I started using Windows10–and the forums are all over the situation, begging Microsoft to fix it and of course they wouldn’t. It helped to get latest network driver update, at least that cut down on the frequency of disconnects, but there’s still an issue. I’ve been on the net a lot today and haven’t been dumped, so hoping the router changes are working…will upload a test video now.

Nothing new uploaded since the slow-as-molasses XP laptop upload a few days ago. Tried uploading a small (17MB) video late last night, but got the same HTTP error twice. Will wait till my next trip to “the big city” and use a faster ISP. Rural internet has some issues…
Somebody in the forums said they solved the Windows 10 “disconnect” problem by making some regedit changes, such as disabling IPv6 in Windows 10 and also disabling DNS Prefetching in Firefox. Doesn’t explain why error still happens with Chrome though…I just think Windows 10 is buggy, personally…especially since I can still (slowly) upload in XP.

@allifarkasartist alright. I’m not an expert on Windows 10, so I can’t make recommendations there. but you might check in with your ISP again anyway and do some tests for packet loss and what not. Your attempt to upload things while on a faster connection should help with that troubleshooting as well. Let us know what you find out!

Will do! I know there are still a lot of other folks out there who are also waiting for some sort of solution.

Went to Chicago and got on a superfast AT&T wifi. Uploaded a 353mb video with no issues, although it took about 1/2 hour to do it.
File name: pirates-pas-de-deux.mov
File type: video/quicktime
Uploaded on: February 18, 2017
File size: 353 MB
Length: 6:23
However, more than 12 hours later could not preview it, as it still said it was “processing”. Don’t know if it will finish or not. But yes, at least it did upload a lot of mb without telling me “https error”. It’s still sitting there, if you have access to my library. -
Hmm, thanks @allifarkasartist . What are you using to encode these videos? I’ll see if I can get in touch with the video team to check this out.
-
Also, I’ve just tried downloading, saving the video, and re-uploading it (since that may resolve encoding issues).

This one is an old one that came straight out of my Nikon D7000 camera, which records in MOV format. I picked it because it was nice and long, so it made for a good challenge.
I usually edit my videos in Adobe Premiere and export them in mp4 format. You can see one of those on my post from last June here: https://allifarkasartist.wordpress.com/2016/06/09/new-improved-2016-quadrille/
I managed to upload this one on my old Windows XP laptop after failing with my new laptop. For whatever reason, I never got in trouble until I 1) upgraded to premium and 2) got a new Windows10 laptop…arghhhhh
Maybe should try uploading an mp4 as a test? I’m still in the fast-internet universe, at least until tomorrow!

@allifarkasartist the one I re-uploaded as an MP4 works now, so I’d recommend trying that and seeing if it helps you.
