http error when uploading media

I’m using Windows 10, tried Firefox, Windows Edge and Chrome browsers, and I keep getting HTTP Error when uploading an image. I’ve even reduced the image to a tiny size and it still wont upload. My blog is on a wordpress.com site and I view it and upload to it fine on my android app.

I’ve seen help for amending PHP and files and contacting host servers etc, but this is only viewed and managed by me on a PC so I dont understand all this jargon about amending settings!! Please help.

In my experience, one possible reason that error can appear if the image file is corrupt or something strange happened to the image file itself.

As a test, can you try uploading a different image, perhaps one you have uploaded in the past so you know for sure that it works, and let me know if you run into the same problem? If an image you know for sure has stopped working, that would indicate a problem with the upload function itself. If older known-to-work-images still work, then the problem may be with the new image file.

For the new image that isn’t working, how exactly was it saved? Was it straight from a camera or exported from a graphics program or something else? If it was transferred to your computer from another device, how was it transferred (an SD card, a cable connected to your phone)?

Sorry for all the questions. The “HTTP Error” message is a bit of a tough one to track down actually!

Many thanks for your reply. I have copied the photos from an SD card onto my PC. I’ve then tried to upload many photos from my PC using WordPress in various browsers and none of them upload. If I transfer the photos to my android phone and upload via the app, they all upload.
I’ve had a new PC, Win 10, and not added a photo to WordPress via PC before only the android app.
What I will try though, is to add an older photo via the PC not taken with that camera. I’ll let you know how I get on.
    Thanks for your help.

Very strange! It also sounds like it will be a bit hard to pin down the source of the problem.

That would be great. Thanks for trying that out!

I added this by mistake, I deleted it in WP media library but it is still visible.
    Can you break the link?

Hi designsimply….I’ve tried old photos, new photos different browsers and sizes. Nothing uploads.

Yet when I try an old photo in my old windows xp pc it uploads. Not tried a new photo as I don’t have any available on my old PC!

So I’m thinking either it is a windows 10 compatibility issue, or a browser compatibility issue. Any known issues with these? I’m just viewing WordPress dashboard via a browser. No app, or server.

    Imgco….wrong thread maybe?

Imgco, the link you posted returns a 404 for me. Try clearing your local browser cache and then test it again: http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

Not that I know of, but I can try testing. I’ll need to setup Windows 10 first (or find someone already has it installed to help me test). I’ll see what I can find out and post back here once I know more. It’s also possible that the problem is some kind of browser or firewall setting on you new computer that is the source of the problem, but that kind of thing is a little harder to track down.

It would be a good test on your side to copy one of the new photos (maybe email it to yourself?) to the old PC and try to upload it from there. If you get the same error, then it’s likely the problem is with the files or how you’re transferring them (which is probably a pretty rare case but I have actually heard of that happening before).

For reference, can you tell me the exact URL you are using when the uploads fail? Is it from WP Admin or the new admin pages? Are you uploading from within a post or directly to the media library?

The url I use to upload is below. Both the individual upload and a multi upload

    https://thebeadyblueeye.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php

I’ve tried disabling all firewal, antivirus applications, still no upload.

Both! With the first url (…upload.php) it gives the HTTP error. With the second url (…media-new.php) it doesnt give any message. Just whirs away ‘connecting’ after I press upload, then nothing.

    Quite bizarre, and very annoying!

Agreed. That error can be so tricky sometimes. :(

Were you able to email one of the new images to yourself on your old PC to see if uploading it from that PC works normally?
