http to https questions

hello, we recently made the change from http to https but want to make sure we have everything covered

so far we have got the ssl, done the 301 redirects and installed the simple ssl plug in, we have the little green lock but are now more interested in indexing on search engines, but have read varied reports on what to do next

do we need to submit a new sitemap with google? if so how do we create a new sitemap for a site that already has one?

do we need to submit a new robots.txt file? if so is this a good resource to do so: https://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/seo-tools/robots-txt-generator/

do we need to go into google webmaster tools and click the site transfer option? if so where does this fall under

are there any other things that need to be done that we are overlooking?

    thanks for any assistance

    Cheers:)

they are kind of in an adult market, not full on porn or anything but nsfw, there are multiple so we are just kind of asking in general terms, do the steps listed above all need to be done, any tips on getting a new sitemap after switching to https etc?

To save you time you can type the actual URL of the site you are referring to into http://whoishostingthis.com to determine who hosts the site so you know where to post for support.

We provide support only for sites hosted on WordPress.COM servers. You could be posting to the wrong support forum. To be clear we do not provide support for local installs of WordPress.ORG software, or for WordPress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, linked to WordPress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites WordPress.COM account page.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The wordpress.ORG support forum is at http://wordpress.org/support. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
See also https://apps.wordpress.org/support/ for app support.

  • Hi there,

These questions would be better on Google’s support forums, as they’d be best able to advise you what changes need to be made in Search Console due to this switch. I do know Google recommends you add all four versions of your URL in Search Console, i.e. http://domain, http://www.domain, https://domain, and https://www.domain, and then set one of those as the primary.

I have no idea if it’s necessary to submit a new sitemap, though. And creating a new sitemap would be handled by whichever SEO plugin you’re using, so it would be best to contact the developers of that plugin in that regard.

thanks, just to clarify definitely a .com

i was reading and the guy who created the real simple ssl plug in said all you need to do is deactivate yoast seo and reactivate again one time and that should take care of it…. i just am a bit of a worrier when it comes to stuff like this because if you do one little thing wrong one day you might wake up, check your stats, and need some tissues

  • just to clarify definitely a .com

WordPress.com vs self-hosted WordPress has nothing to do with if your domain ends in .com or not. If your site is hosted on WordPress.com’s servers, so you signed up for a WordPress.com username account and your site has a free *.wordpress.com address, then it’s WordPress.com. All WordPress.com sites have SSL enabled by default, so the mere fact that you did something to switch to SSL means you don’t have a WordPress.com site.

Your site is using the open source WordPress software at another hosting provider, we have no access to it at all, and cannot help you beyond the general advice I gave above. Please contact the developers of the SSL and Yoast plugins directly for help with this, as they know how their plugins work and are in the best position to advise you.
