I deleted my blog cru2017.blog few days ago. Now I’d like to build it back, but WordPress wouldn’t allow me to register neither cru2017blog.wordpress.com, nor cru2017.blog, saying that ‘This domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com site.’
Can you unlock one of these?
Can I buy cru2017.blog name again? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Once you delete your site you can’t have the same domain name. Read the link below –
https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/As you’ve lately deleted your site, there is a possibility staff can retrieve it for you. I’ve added modlook tag in sidebar to get staff assistance.

@cru2017blog we may be able to restore the .blog domain for you. Please start a new site (you’ll need a different .wordpress.com address since you deleted the old one) and add a Personal plan. Then we’ll try restoring the domain to it. Thank you!

Hi Supernova,
Many thanks. If could have my old
cru2017.blog back that would great.
I’ve created a new site: https://crucru2017.wordpress.com and added a personal plan. Thanks once again,
Maija -
Great, thanks @cru2017blog. I was able to restore the domain for you. Can you let us know what you were trying to do when you cancelled the domain and deleted the site? You’ll want to not do that again. But if you can also let us know what you were hoping it would do, perhaps we can point you in the right direction.

Thanks, that’s amazing.
I deleted the site because of an emergency situation: in needed the whole website to be temporarily but immediately unavailable and in couldn’t find anything in the settings that wouldn allow me to do it. Is there such a possibility?
Retrospectively, the only other thing I could have done is put all my posts and pages in drafts or private, but I had not time. It had to be resolved in 3 literally minutes.
Thanks again for getting it back there. -
Hey @cru2017blog,
You need not make all the posts private one by one. In such a case, you can always make your site private instead of deleting it. This way you won’t lose your site URL as well as contents and your site will be temporarily unavailable as you want it :)
All you need to do is switch Privacy Settings to private and save changes.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ -
Hello there Maija, I just wanted to add that taking your site temporarily offline, whether by deleting (not recommended) or changing its privacy settings to Private (recommended), does not immediately remove it from search engine caches. It takes some time before search engines recrawl and reindex your deleted site. Meanwhile, anyone searching for your old xxx.wordpress.com site content will still be able to see it via the search engine cache. If you want it removed there, you’ll need to contact each search engine separately to request its removal. WordPress.com has no control over this. https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/
Also, now that you’ve changed your site URL, you’ll also want to change the URL on your Profile page. Otherwise people clicking on your username in new comments you leave will arrive at a site deleted page. This won’t change the link on any comments you may have already left on other people’s sites; it will only show the new one on new comments going forward.
Hope that helps.
Lastly, I’m uncertain what now happens to any followers you had on your previous xxx.wordpress.com site since you were/are using a custom domain, so would appreciate a Staff reply. Thanks.

Thanks everyone.
Krutigude, I wish i had known about Privacy setting. I accessed the site with mobile app, so may there the options looked less evident.
Anyway, it was a matter of rush. My error. But good to know.Comments aren’t really any issue for me; I had disable them. Same for the followers.
The biggest loss is the url, but that’s the price to pay :)

@justjennifer followers don’t lose their old follow, but since nothing is there they won’t see any more posts.
I recommend against deleting the site unless the site owner has absolutely no use for any of it anymore, and even then I’d much rather see them make it private in case they change their mind :)

Thank you @supernovia for mentioning followers won’t be lost.
I have a small suggestion as a WordPress.com user and volunteer. It would be great if ‘Changing a Site with Followers from Public to Private’ section on support site is more descriptive.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/#changing-a-site-with-followers-from-public-to-privateThis section doesn’t mention about what happens to followers. Also, I have one question. After the site owner makes blog private, will the followers be able to view the site?
What if the site owner wants to have followers and doesn’t want them to view the site as well when it’s private? What do you suggest to do in such a case?
-
@jonessmith – I was referring to the link in your other username which appears when you comment on other people’s sites.
@supernovia-thanks for the confirmation on followers on a custom domain not being lost.
After the site owner makes blog private, will the followers be able to view the site?
No. The site owner will need to invite those former followers as Viewers and can remove them at any time.
What if the site owner wants to have followers and doesn’t want them to view the site as well when it’s private?
This seems to be a contradiction. If the site is marked Private, it can only be accessed and followed by Viewers invited by the site owner.
Hope that helps.

@justjennifer
I believe I am not following something here. Please excuse me for not understanding if it’s too simple. From what I understand @supernovia mentioned already existing followers will stay but they won’t see any more posts. Does this mean all the posts or future posts that are published. Will the viewer see nothing at all on visiting the site they follow which is now private?
Also, @justjennifer you mentioned followers on custom domain not being lost. Does that mean the followers on other sites that don’t have custom domain will be lost?
-
Hello again, yesterday when I posted my above reply, cru2017.blog was not yet a Private site. It was still publicly visible and using the Twenty Sixteen theme with the dummy First post. Perhaps @supernovia saw it that way as well when she replied. Or perhaps I’m assuming incorrectly.
If cru2017.blog remains Private, no former followers will have access to the site unless the site owner invites them. If they try to access the now Private site, they will encounter the special page you see now.
This site is marked private by its owner. If you would like to view it, you’ll need permission from the site owner. Request an invite and we’ll send your username to the site owner for their approval.
As far as your second question: If I recall correctly, if someone changes their xxx.wordpress.com site URL using the Change URL tool, their followers will move over automatically to the new site URL. However, if they export and import their site content from an old address to a new address, then they will need to request Staff to move their followers for them. https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
-
@supernovia-thanks for the confirmation on followers on a custom domain not being lost.
Ah no, sorry that isn’t what I meant, and I think I misunderstood your question too. I believe followers follow the site, not the domain, and that they wouldn’t be transferred automatically. But I will confirm with the reader team on that.
-
For what it’s worth though, I’ve rarely seen someone with an established site go and delete it like that. Usually I see it if people are starting to set something up and want to start over. This is the first time I’ve seen someone delete their site to make it temporarily private.
-
@justjennifer I’ve confirmed — it’s quite complicated :D Sometimes the subscriptions would pick up, other times not.
We may need to have someone from our reader team take a look at individual cases when they come up, so just ping us if you see issues along these lines and we’ll help how we can.
