HTTPS Certificate

How do I get an https certificate for a WordPress hosted site? It is blocking third party certificate providers.

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Unknown

  • Hi @pdcooper97, if the site is hosted here, we provide the certificate for you automatically. Are you having any trouble with that? If so, could you share a link to the site?

That’s what I thought, but I’m still getting ssl issues.

    Site: https://pfvumc.org/

Thanks for clarifying. The problem here is that while your site is hosted here at WordPress.com, your domain is registered at GoDaddy and has inconsistent DNS settings, which is causing the problem:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns29.domaincontrol.com
    ns3.wordpress.com
    ns30.domaincontrol.com

You need to log into GoDaddy and remove those two domaincontrol.com nameservers so you only have the WordPress.com ones set that that will fix the issue. Having mixed DNS means the domain will resolve erratically and any time it tries to resolve using the domaincontrol.com nameservers (where there is not an SSL certificate set), you’ll see that error.

In the future, since this site has a Business plan, you have access to priority email and live chat support if you log into the account that owns this upgrade. Once you’re logged into the correct account, you can access this priority support from your account page where you can get help more quickly than posting in the free public support forums.

Ok I made the prescribed changes for the DNS entries under GoDaddy so the WordPress DNS servers supposedly are in control. But GoDaddy will not allow me to delete the domaincontrol.com entries.

But now when you try to go to the website, it says unable to connect.

GoDaddy is saying the domain IP address A record for PFVUMC.ORG is both 15.197.142.173 and 3.33.152.147. I can’t even tell which is the correct one for WordPress

  • Are you hosting your own copy of WordPress at GoDaddy? If so you’d want to contact them if the server is having issues, and they would also need to help you with any SSL installations as well.

Or if you’re trying to host the site here with us, you would need to connect the domain to the site, then use our name servers:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

I wasn’t able to see a site hosted with us under this account, but you can start one here if you’d like:

And if it helps, here’s the difference between the free WordPress software and our managed hosting services:

We should be hosted on WordPress with the business-level account.
We ported in the existing domain when we created the site. We still use the GoDaddy for email servers though.

I thought this account was the one linked to the site, but evidently, it is my personal WordPress test account.

Yes, if you log into the correct site, you can access priority support through your account page:

    https://wordpress.com/help/contact

You’ll need to go back to GoDaddy and explain the situation.

You set your domain nameservers (a.k.a. NS) for your website host and your domain mailserver (a.k.a. MX) to whatever service is hosting your email (in your case, GoDaddy). GoDaddy support should be able to not only set your domain nameservers to point to WordPress.com, they should be able to remove the incorrect domaincontrol.com ones while retaining your MX records for your email.

Their own instructions can be found here: https://www.godaddy.com/help/change-nameservers-for-my-domains-664

The option you want is “Connect my domain to a website I’ve built” and not the weird “change your A record” (which is what the IP addresses are used for) option, which seems like their support thinks you have.

Let us know if they still give you trouble.

Looking at the setup we have on GoDaddy, it looks like we are unable to delete the name servers because of the email we have linked to that domain. It looks like we may have to move hosting to GoDaddy to solve the issue.

  • Hi @pdcooper97,

Looking at your DNS records, I see that you already have those set for your GoDaddy email: https://dns-lookup.jvns.ca/#pfvumc.org|all-the-records

In this case, removing GoDaddy’s nameservers shouldn’t affect your mail service. If something does go awry, you can always add the MX records back — there’s no need change hosts, and you can keep your domain registered with GoDaddy.

We are having an issue with the site now. We’re trying to get it back to the state it was in but keep getting redirected to domain helper on wordpress once we slip past the https alert. Any ideas?

  • Hi there,

At the moment your domain appears to have name server records for both WordPress.com and GoDaddy, and as a result your domain is trying to go to both our and GoDaddy’s servers at the same time.

Log into your account at GoDaddy, go to your domain’s DNS settings, and make sure you’re looking at the authoritative name servers for your domain. Those must be set to either ns#.domaincontrol.com, if you want your DNS to continue being managed by GoDaddy, or ns#.wordpress.com if you want the DNS to be handled by us. It should not show both.

If you want DNS to be handled by GoDaddy, next go to your DNS records themselves. If there are any NS records mentioning WordPress.com, delete those. You should also only see GoDaddy’s default domaincontrol NS records.

To point the domain to us you should only have two custom A records for the IPs 192.0.78.181 and 192.0.78.254 respectively, and a CNAME record pointing the www subdomain to pfvumc.wpcomstaging.com

If you’re unsure what to do, show my reply here to GoDaddy support, and they should understand what needs to be done on that end.
