HTTPS : Did I just shoot myself in the foot?
-
In response to having our WP site hacked and fixing it today, I tried to change over to https. Didn’t do it carefully enough and changed the web address to https by adding ‘s’ after our website address on the General Settings page and hit save BEFORE establishing an SSL. Now I can’t log back in to change it because I can’t establish a secure connection.
Did I shoot myself in the foot or is there a save somehow?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Hello JY,
Please share us your site address.
However, you do sound like you’re mentioning about a self-hosted WordPress site using the open source WordPress software.
To change your URL back to the original site address, try this: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_database
And by the way, changing the site URL to HTTPS will not make it SSL-enabled. You have to install a SSL certificate for that purpose. Here’s one of the guides I found: https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/
For future self-hosted WordPress issues, you’re recommended to post your questions at the WordPress.org forum and seek help from the experts and volunteer members there. You may need to register an account if you don’t already have one.

Thank you so very much for the thorough and thoughtful reply and for the SSL resources (which I will now consult prior to going through THAT again!). Apologies for the confusion about posting location.
Thankfully, I found the PHP editor myself yesterday inside our host’s system tools (GoDaddy) and was able to get it back up (didn’t have time to return here to update thread).
Much much appreciated!
Regards,
JY
