  We have taken over marketing efforts for the Bend Law Office (www.bendlawoffice.com), but are having trouble gaining access to the DNS records for the domain bendlawoffice.com. The registrar shows that the nameservers are WordPress.com, but the site is no longer hosted on WordPress.com. We believe that the site was hosted here originally, and when it was, they connected the domain to the hosting and set up the DNS records using the WordPress.com platform, then at some point, they moved the hosting to another provider, but kept the DNS hosted on WordPress.com.
  I’m not sure if something has changed with WordPress.com’s platform, but it doesn’t appear that you can have a domain under your WordPress.com account without it being linked to a hosting plan, as when I try to visit the domains page for the site, I get the following message: “Domains are not available for this site. You can only purchase domains for sites hosted on WordPress.com at this time.” The last time their DNS changed was about 7 years ago according to public records, so it seems likely that things may have changed significantly with feature availability during that time.
  Is there a way for us to access the DNS that is still being hosted in WordPress.com for the domain bendlawoffice.com?

  Hi there! The domain does appear to be pointing to our Name Servers; however as you say the site itself is no longer hosted here; public information for the domain indicates that it is pointing to a separate host (WP Engine) by means of an ‘A’ record pointing to this IP address: 104.198.110.226 and a ‘CNAME’ record pointing to this address: aking2010.wpengine.com.

  Since bendlawoffice.com isn’t actually registered here with us, it might actually be worth making changes to the Name Server settings directly at your domain provider. If you were to make changes to the DNS here on WordPress.com, the domain would essentially be directed as such: Your domain provider ⇒ WordPress.com ⇒ The current host of the site.

  If you access the domain settings with your domain provider, you can instead change the name servers back to your domain provider, and manage the DNS records from there so that it goes from your domain provider ⇒ the site’s current host, without WordPress.com as a go-between.
