HUGE BLOG HELP PLEASE

  • Unknown's avatar

I currently have 3 blogs. One is for editorial things I’ve written, another is a diary of my work experience placements, another is a fashion blog and the other I started but decided to not even continue until I figure out the ones I have.

My main issue is, I want to combine all of these blogs because I want to make one blog – where there is a section for my work exp, a section for my editorial work, and then the main part which I can update will include my fashion stories, as well as anything new such as photos from my holidays, beauty picks, etc. The name I want this blog to have is krystalscanlon.wordpress.com – but this name is already taken by one of my blogs. I thought about deleting this, but then, I’ve got comments on these things I’ve written too, and I don’t want to lose the comments. I was thinking if I used one of the ‘add new page’ sections as a diary of my experience – but the problem with that, is that you can’t add ‘new post’ to these pages, because it doesn’t allow new posts, just one post and you keep adding to it, but then I’m not sure if there is an overall limit as to how much you can add to this single page.
I thought maybe the problem I have, is the fact I have a blog and not a website – but I can’t afford to have a website, hence why I figured sticking to a blog would be the cheapest thing (until I can potentially get advertisers or something, but I wouldn’t even know how to go about that.
Can someone PLEASE help? Email me at [email removed by jenia] if you have any suggestions because I am well and truly stuck and want to get this going within the next couple of days!

Hi there, lots of questions here, so I’m going to point you to a few resources.

One way to combine all content in one place would be to import all of your blogs into one and then use categories to classify posts as “work experience”, “fashion”, “editorial”, etc. Then you could create a custom menu and link to those categories from the menu.

    Moving between WordPress.com blogs: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-between-wordpress-com-blogs
    Using categories: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
    Creating a custom menu: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
    Custom menu widget: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/
Site Redirect upgrade, something to consider if you do migrate your content and want to redirect the traffic: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

This article explains how to use WordPress.com to create a static website rather than a blog: http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

You also mentioned that you are interested in getting advertisers in the future, so this support article would be useful, too: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/

I hope this helps – happy blogging :)

    Hi Jenia,

Thanks so much. Sorry to be a pain (Again) but while they’re clear, I’m just worried about importing all content because I’ll lose the comments, and then, what if it doesn’t work as I wanted? I think I read somewhere that the changes can’t be undone?

You mention I could do the static website which is what I want, but I thought the additional pages didn’t allow for updating posts – just one post that you can either add to or have a small blurb? rather than say the typical main page where you can add multiple posts?

Also, it mentions to have a homepage if you want – isn’t this just the main page anyway where it just shows the latest updated info?

Sorry, I’m just getting so confused and overwhelmed – is there any way to speak to you as I do this (via an im of some sort) so you can assist while I do it? Thanks again so much

    Hi there,

I’m just worried about importing all content because I’ll lose the comments, and then, what if it doesn’t work as I wanted? I think I read somewhere that the changes can’t be undone?

You can try exporting each site before you start as a sort of backup. If things don’t go according to plan, you can simply remove the bad content and run the import, and your content will be back.

You mention I could do the static website which is what I want, but I thought the additional pages didn’t allow for updating posts – just one post that you can either add to or have a small blurb? rather than say the typical main page where you can add multiple posts?

Right, the custom page only allows for one “body” of content. You could treat the custom page as a sort of journal, if you wanted, where you simply add your new content to the beginning or end of the post with the date.

Also, it mentions to have a homepage if you want – isn’t this just the main page anyway where it just shows the latest updated info?

This is the default “Show latest posts” front page. You also have the option of using a specific post or page as your front page.

Sorry, I’m just getting so confused and overwhelmed – is there any way to speak to you as I do this (via an im of some sort) so you can assist while I do it?

No problem–we’re here to help, and we love doing it! :) We don’t offer live support at this time, but we actively monitor the forums.

If you’re in need of any additional help, or get stuck anywhere, just let us know here, and we’ll be happy to help.

    Cheers,

Thanks so much. Can I ask one question I actually forgot to ask before – what do I do about changing the domain name? One of my blogs is called Krystalscanlon.wordpress.com – I want to use this name, however the info on the blog is not the full content I want the blog to have – How do I go about this for a new blog, or is it best to just use this one, export the info and then use this blog as the ‘main’ one and get all the other stuff in this one?

    Thanks

It’s probably easiest to use the blog with the address you want as your “starting point”, and merge all of your content into it.

    Best,
    P.

Rightttt so fingers crossed this is the last main help I need (for now – ha).

I’m going to try and merge the fashion blog to the one with the domain i want to use. However, what I really want to do (though don’t know if it’s possible) – is be able to put all the content/stories from the blog on fashion, into this other blog, with the dates, etc when they were originally written, so that all the work slots into place – is that even possible? Does that even make sense?

Let me know – I can elaborate if needed! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Oh and also, if I have comments, etc – or people have favourited my work in the fashion blog – will i lose these if I move this blog stuff to my other blog? Will those people know that my site has just changed because its still the same link? (or will be a new link which matches to the post?) – not even sure if that makes sense :/

Yes, the import will keep the original dates, you don’t need to worry about it.

You WILL lose the Favorites, Likes, etc when you import the posts. They will not know what you’ve done unless you change the previous blog and leave a static landing page to say where you’re going.
