Though removing footer credit links, which leads to the untrue assumption that you designed the theme, and that you are hosting your site yourself is not allowed under the Terms of Service, it’s possible to add your own text to the footer area using CSS, if you have purchased the Business bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/ or Premium bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/ of upgrades, as they both contain the Custom Design upgrade required to do so.
Then you can include styling credit if you have done any unique styling and/or you can include a copyright notice.
See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable Premium bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/ that contains a custom design upgrade required for CSS editing: Custom design – Frequently Asked Questions
