I accidentally deleted my Home page and now it is messed up

  • Unknown's avatar

A few days ago when I setup my site I was having problems with the themes. At some point I deleted the Home page in hopes of getting the new theme to remake it from scratch… I was wrong…

Then when I tried to configure the main page as a static page with Home as landing, the “Home” page was not listed anymore!

Today I discovered that the page was in the Trashed pages and that it could be restored. However, when I restored it I see it is screwed up and does not show like the usual static page. It looks as if all the content is shifted to a column with absolutely nothing but blank space on an invisible left column. The normal landing page does show fine with its Blog Sidebar and all, but the “restored” Home is missing that. How can I fix that?

    Normal landing: https://panamavibes.wordpress.com/
    Restored Home: https://panamavibes.wordpress.com/home/

I have been looking at it in the editor and customizer but I don’t see any column. In fact in the editor the entire content shows horizontally centered, but in page preview and live mode it is skewed to the right.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hum… no possibility to edit the original post so here it goes… The same I observe on the About page (https://panamavibes.wordpress.com/about) which shows an empty left column unlike the original page presented in the pattern selector.

Experimenting further I noticed that the empty space on the invisible left column is filled with the list of blog articles even if the page is NOT meant to list any blog articles (like my About page or the design I chose for the main page). I think this patterns stuff is not quite working.

For days I have been stuck on this and would like to have it resolved soon. I don’t believe something so simple cannot be accomplished with WordPress.

As I mentioned in a previous (unanswered) post, I deleted my Home page but when I restored it in a new theme it was no longer the same.

What I want is a full width page that I can use as front page, and also another full width page with sidebar (my theme has footers and a sidebar) that I can use as about page. So far it is NOT working as you can see here:

    https://panamavibes.wordpress.com/home

    About

I have tried multiple times creating a page and then selecting Patterns:
Dashboard | Pages | Add New | Add Page | Home (selector)

Then from the presented page gallery list I have tried these two:

    • (Home) Modern blog layout with subscription and intro
    • (Home) Image showcase portfolio layout
    • (About) About layout with intro and contact

In the designer they show as full width, but when I press preview or if I publish them (see examples above) then they are half-width with an empty column on the left where it expects to render blog post excerpts) even if they are NOT pages for posts.

Can someone PLEASE help resolve this situation?

Hi there, weekends tend to be slower in the forums and it’s possible that no one saw your question earlier.

Your site is using the Twenty Seventeen theme https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen I’m not certain I understood how you wish your homepage to display.

Did you want to use the theme’s special front page configuration that pulls in other pages to display as a part of the homepage? If so, you’ll find the information on how to set that up under the section “Front Page” in the theme’s showcase page.

If you meant something else, please post back here and give us more details.

Hello again I just merged your other post on this topic https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/i-accidentally-deleted-my-home-page-and-now-it-is-messed-up/#post-3679004 into this one. When asking for help please update your existing forum thread rather than opening new ones, as that makes it easier for us to track progress on your issue.

What I want is a full width page that I can use as front page, and also another full width page with sidebar (my theme has footers and a sidebar) that I can use as about page.

Again, if you look at the Twenty Seventeen showcase page, you’ll see it says it has “One- and Two-Column Layouts” however, that “two-column” width is not really a “sidebar” where you can add widgets and such. Have a look at the demo site:
    https://twentyseventeendemo.wordpress.com/news/
    https://twentyseventeendemo.wordpress.com/about-this-theme/

Try changing the setting to one-column in the Customizer to see if that doesn’t work better for you.

Post back here if you have more questions.

I would like my landing (front) page to be a static page and have a separate page for my posts (with sidebar). I don’t mind if my front page has sidebar as long as I can display STATIC content on the rest of the page. For the same reason I want my About page (see above) as a static page as well.

If you looked at it, you probably saw the my About page “pretends” to be static but instead it leaves an empty space for the part that WOULD have been dynamic and that looks really bad. In fact, it doesn’t even look like what is presented in the page selection template.

My site is about tourism and travel, not about restaurants, shops (maybe I sell something in the future), etc.

I think there is something messed up in my account. I was looking up the Shawburn theme, it isn’t quite a fit but looks nice. When I preview it it looks as advertised but when I click on Try & Customize (without activating) it doesn’t look as advertised! the social links at the top are not showing and the front page is totally different, in their version is a nice static and in my preview it only shows posts.

Is there a way to reset an account/site without losing the site user name (panamavibes)? I am at a stage that I am quite frustrated with this and am willing to start over AS LONG AS I don’t lose my site handle.

Hello again, you can empty your current site content rather than deleting your site (which would remove the site URL). However, that means starting over from scratch and re-adding your content again. Here’s a link to our guide for that https://wordpress.com/support/empty-site/

But before you do that, let me flag this thread for Staff. Perhaps they can suggest a different route.

It would save me a lot of time indeed, I have spent a few days in this issue and have not been able to release this to my network.

  • Hi @lordofscripts, apologies for missing this earlier. We usually try to answer tickets that don’t have replies, so when you reply to yourself it can kind of throw things off. It’s best to avoid “bumping” the thread with new responses, so we’ll be sure to see it.

I’ve noticed that since your last response here, you’ve changed themes again to Baskerville. And currently, if I were to reset that, it would leave your current setup and just get rid of the articles you’ve added. I’m going to recommend against that.

All of these older themes have different front-page configuration settings, and I think that’s what’s been throwing you off. If you like the look of Baskerville for your blog page, but would prefer a static front page with a sidebar, no problem. Start here:
    https://wordpress.com/page

You can pick a template if you’d like, or start blank, and make whatever changes you need. Once it’s published, you can make it the front page (and establish a separate blog page) with these steps:

    Set the Homepage

Please do let us know if you need more help! Just respond once here with as many details as will be relevant, and we’ll get to it as soon as we can.
