Hi there. To use a domain you bought elsewhere with your WordPress.com site you’ll need to buy the domain mapping upgrade, as explained here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
If you want to build your own website from scratch you’ll need to buy a hosting account for that domain and install the WordPress.org software on that domain. More information on WordPress.org (which is completely separate from WordPress.com) here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thank you, the mapping worked, really appreciate it.
If in the future I want to migrate to .org, is this possible with my current site that I’ve built and paid for? -

Yes and no. You can migrate your content and followers to WordPress.org very easily, but those sites work completely differently from WordPress.com and you can’t take take any upgrades or premium themes over to WordPress.org, as it’s a completely different system. Any upgrades you buy for a WordPress.COM site can only be used on that WP.COM site or transferred to another WP.COM site. They don’t apply at all to WP.ORG.
Many themes on WordPress.com have an equivalent theme on WordPress.org, but buying a .com premium theme does not allow you to automatically use the .org premium theme – you’ll have to buy it again for a .org site.
The site itself, including any customisations you made, you’ll have to do over from scratch on the WP.org install, and for many features that are included automatically on WP.com you’ll need to install plugins to a .org site.
And then, of course, you’ll need to pay a web host for hosting your site, something that we get for free on WordPress.com, in addition to the annual renewal fee for your domain name you pay to your registrar.
You can see here for more information on migrating from .com to .org: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

Loads I am sure as I am such a clueless debutant trying to navigate this clever e-world!
Thanks again -
Hey, we were all clueless when we started out. I only really started learning how everything works when I started volunteering in the forums a year ago :)

Imagine what it was like 9 years ago when there was a single Support Staff and no support docs. That’s when I began and I was clueless. lol :D

@timethief
On the other hand, there was no one to tell you when you gave someone the wrong advice. Much less pressure ;-) -
Not true. We did have our errors corrected. We learned how to use Google search and forum tag search, and we learned not to post unless we were sure we did have correct answers. :)

Exactly. I registered April 8, 2006 and answered my first support question April 12, 2006. :)
