I am being charged every 11 months for yearly (12-month) registration…
-
Hi WordPress, I did not find an answer to this on the forums or anywhere in support:
Please know that in general I am very happy with WordPress and recommend it to friends.
However, I was recently looking at my billing history in the My Upgrades page and I see that for the yearly (12 month) domain registration, I actually get billed every 11 months. I recently enabled auto-renew, and sure enough, it reports I will be charged at the end of a period that is 11, not 12, months.
–Is this a simple glitch in my account? …If so, could you please correct the error, to reflect the registration period for a 12-month yearly period?
— If this is somehow not an error, could you please explain to me why we get charged every 11 months for what should be yearly renewal? Thanks so much for your help!

Howdy,
This is intentional. The registration period is for 12 months, but with auto-renew, we make the transaction 30 days before expiration. We do this so if there are any issues (declined credit card, for example), everyone has a bit of breathing room to have it figured out before the actual expiration date.
Especially with domain names, there is a relatively short grace period after the true expiration date, afterwards a hefty late fee is imposed by our domain provider. We don’t want anyone to have to pay that, thus we try to resolve any issues before the actual expiration.
To confirm, you purchased your domain in June 2012 for a 12-month period, ending June 2013. In May 2013, you were charged for another 12-month period, which will end in June 2014. The next automatic transaction would be in May 2014 to extend registration until June 2015.
If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!

Thank you so much kraftbj! This is a clear and helpful explanation. Based on this, I appreciate that WordPress handles it this way, because I the streamlining of domain registration through WordPress, plus the convenience of auto-renew, but it would be sad to hear of WordPress users losing their domain names because of, say, Target hackers causing them to replace credit cards (just happened to me) and then they forget to inform WordPress of the change. (And… as soon as I receive my new CVV number, I’ll inform you of my card change!) Anyway, thank you for clarifying this for me.
If you don’t mind I’d like to suggest that this be explained at the outset when a person signs up for auto-renew, just to avoid any “Hey, what gives??” reaction when customers look over their billing history. (Unless you are already doing that somewhere and I missed it!)
Thanks for the explanation and thank you for handling my domain registration with such care. I very much appreciate the work you do at WordPress! (: -
That’s a great suggestion. The Store team is working on improving our checkout process, so I’ll pass this their way for consideration on the upgrades.
If you need anything else, please do let me know.
Cheers!
