i am being cyberbullied, what to do?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. I am being cyberbullied via “comments.” I publish most comments because I believe in free speech. But whoever this is is going out of his or her way. I am scared. I am wondering if this is someone I know or if there are people who do this for kicks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The world is full of people who say things we do not appreciate. If you are being threatened and truly are in fear for your personal health and safety then contact the police and a lawyer. Otherwise, you can control exactly who is allowed to comment on your blog.

    Short version:
You can’t block or delete followers because there is no means of blocking anyone on the internet from access any public blog and submitting comments if and when comments are open.

    Long version:
We cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. Anyone and everyone can access public blogs and that’s indeed what the public designation means. However, please read this about public blogs that become private blogs > Blog Privacy and Subscribers > http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/blog-privacy-and-subscribers/

To change blog visibility to Private go to Dashboard > Settings > Reading scroll to Site Visibility and choose option 3
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

You don’t need an upgrade of any kind at all to invite multiple people to contribute to a private blog. See:
    adding users http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
    user roles http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Note that you have complete control over everything that’s posted to your blog via comment moderation
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at Settings > Discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website URL. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that.

Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. In fact for over a decade only about 30% of us have IPs that trace back to any individual computer. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

If the person threatening you has a .wordpress.com hosted blog then I can offer some further help. You need to file a complaint and submit it to terms of Service Staff for WordPress.COM please read these so you know how to proceed:
    http://en.wordpress.com/complaints/
Defamation, abuse, threats: We suspend content for inciting violence or threatening or impersonating a private person. Please see our abuse process for more information.
    http://en.wordpress.com/abuse/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/private-user-data/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/disputes/

These matters are not discussed on these public support forums that are available to all with internet access I`m tagging this thread for closure.

    Hi there,

I’m so sorry to hear about this. Please do as @timethief has mentioned above if the commenter is violating our Terms of Service.

If you want to block these commenters, I highly recommend moderating your comments so that comments like that are not published on your blog. You can add names of certain commenters to a comment blacklist so that they cannot write comments on your blog. This is possible on Settings > Discussion in your Dashboard.

Let me know if you have any questions with this!
