I am confused

I know my site will be getting many more hits very soon and I would like to run ads to take advantage of the clicks.
I keep reading through, but I get confused.
Please help me to decipher what I must do.
make a domain?
how do I get the ads then?
will they appear in the areas of my blog I want them to appear?
do I get paid for page views or actual clicks on the ads?Thank you very much.

There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com. It’s for blogs on their own domains

Thank you for this quick reply.
So, I have two options. I could get a custom domain from WordPress and hope they accept my blog for the WordAds.
Or, I could have my own, hosted site, perhaps with another host, for example, and then use the wordpress software and also have the blog redirected.
