I am confused about the number of visits my site gets everyday. Which one to trust, jetpack, WP statistics or google?
WP statitiscis give this number for Tuesday Feb. 10 is 9896.

    Jetpack gives it as 4786
    Google gives it as 5010

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

There are two main differences between Google Analytics and Jetpack:

    1. By default, Jetpack doesn’t record visits from logged in users. That includes all page views you can generate when viewing your site while being logged in. You can check this behavior by clicking on “Configure” under the Stats module in the Jetpack menu.

    2. Jetpack Stats automatically exclude visits from bots and spiders that crawl your site but are not “real” visitors.

That could help to explain the difference. Alternatively, can you make sure the timezone is set the same on Google Analytics and your site? Perhaps it’s counting timezones differently.

    Thank you Jeremey.
I can understand the difference between Jetpack and Google Analytics, but what I can not understand is the difference between the plugin we have installed and the jetpack one. They are both from WP, then why there is a difference.

    Hi!

I’m not quite sure what you mean by “the plugin we have installed and the Jetpack one.” Are you referring to the Google Analytics plugin or a separate plugin?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I am referring to the WP Statistics Version 8.8.

  • Unknown's avatar

For example, yesterday the WP stats plugin gives the number of visitors as 2.947 and the number of page views as 19.044 while the Jetpack gives the number of views as 5.679.
What is the difference between views and pageviews? Why there us much difference in numbers though the two plugins are from the same source (WordPress)?
Thank you for your understanding. we have lots of websites and we want to use one authentic plugin that gives accurate numbers.

Is there a difference between a visit and a pageview?

  • Unknown's avatar

Why there us much difference in numbers though the two plugins are from the same source (WordPress)?

This plugin is not created by the same individuals (us) that power the Jetpack plugin. It’s created be a completely separate third-party entity. As a result, I’m not sure how it’s calculating the statistics or why the Jetpack numbers might be slightly different. I would recommend using the Jetpack plugin for stats moving forward.

Is there a difference between a visit and a pageview?

The two main units of traffic measurement are views and unique visitors. A view is counted when a visitor loads or reloads a page. A visitor is counted when we see a user or browser for the first time in a given period (day, week, month). So, a visitor can have multiple views on your site. Does that help to clarify?

Now, it is clear. But the Jetpack does not calculate visitors, it gives the number of views only. Maybe our team does not know how to get the right stats.

Please advice on how to get the visitors number form the jetpack.

Jetpack just displays the View numbers by default. You can obtain the Visitor numbers using either of the following methods:

    1. Click the “Show Me” link at the top of the stats page shown here:

      http://d.pr/i/1a337

That will take you to a more detailed stats view including Visitor numbers

    2. You can load the following URL directly:

Thank you Jeremey for your help. What I want to emphasize is that: are the Jetpack figures real ones?

We are preparing our reports so that we want to use it for our reports.

are the Jetpack figures real ones?

Gathering website visitor statistics is not an exact science, so it’s not possible to guarantee that any tool gives you 100% down to the last visitor “real” stats. The Jetpack tool does give you accurate stats, and more importantly it collects stats in a consistent way so if you use it to track your site growth over time, it will give you an accurate picture of your site growth–which is essential for the types of reports you are creating.

Thank you lizthefair for your reaction.

I have another question. Why is the old history of Jetpack deleted? When I checked last year stats I found only the last four months (Sep. – Dec.).

Is the any explanation for this and how to restore the old stats?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Unknown's avatar

I see stats for this site that are older than that. Here’s a direct link (only you can access it)
    https://wordpress.com/stats/month/www.muslim-library.com

Do you see the stats you are looking for there?

  • Unknown's avatar

OK. That’s fine. But from the WordPress dashboard of the site itself, the stats older than Sept are not there.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmm. I’ve checked with our Jetpack experts and will get back to you when I hear back. In the meantime, you could also ask your question to them directly from the link below.

Based on what you’ve shared so far, it sounds like the stats you are having trouble with aren’t connected to Jetpack. That having been said, if you submit your question via the link I gave you earlier, the Jetpack people may be able to help you out as they do a lot more day to day work with self-hosted WordPress installs.
