I am having trouble switching from wordpress.com to a self-hosted site

I originally had a custom domain name (equinetapestry.com) with a blog hosted here at wordpress.com. I have since switched the domain to a self-hosted account with GoDaddy, but when I open the dashboard through the self-hosted site, it is showing the admin screen as still located at equinetapestry.wordpress.com. When I pull up my domain management here, it does not show me with a custom domain. I have set up export files of the blog, but how do I break this link back to here so that I can install them over there? (Not that I don’t like you guys, but I do want to consolidate my blogs and website in one self-hosted place!)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • It looks like the nameservers for equinetapestry.com are still pointing to WordPress.com. You will need to set them to point to your GoDaddy hosting account using whatever values GoDaddy provided you with when you set your hosting up. Here are the instructions for making that change from our side:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

Let me know if you have any trouble.

Thank you so much for responding. That was the part where I encountered trouble, because I had gone through the “change name server” part here, and when I pull the Manage Your Domains there are no domains listed. It just says “All Domains (0)”. My host at GoDaddy does show the domain as being there, but when I launch WordPress from the menu there, the dashboard shows up with the address for WordPress.com.

What is also throwing me is that the domain is there at the new host, but I have not yet uploaded the exported blog files. I did successfully upload them to a second (unrelated) domain there at the new host using Import. But when I launch WordPress from the equinetapestry.com domain, it is sending me right to equinetapestry.wordpress.com/wp-admin/. That is the part I do not understand. Is there something else I need to do on the GoDaddy end to stop it from going back here for the dashboard?

And thank you for your patience. I am very new to the whole topic of domains and hosts, and I only hope I am not making these questions more confusing than they need to be.

  • First things first, you have to switch the nameservers. Nothing will work until you do.

That is where I have encountered a problem. Going through the steps in the tutorial to change the name server (http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/), I can get to Domain Manager, but there are no domains listed and the icon for Nameservers is grayed out. So I can never make it to the latter parts of the instructions, because there are no Domain Names to click so the blue “Manage” and the “Edit Nameservers” options never appear.

If when I am in the Domain Manager – Home screen, I click on DNS and get the pull down menu DNS Manager, that takes me to a screen that says “No domains in list.”

The people at GoDaddy did walk me through transferring my domains, and it seems that this was part of what we did at that time. Is there something that could have gone wrong in that process?

  • While equinetapestry.com was at one time registered here at WordPress.com. Its registration has been moved to GoDaddy. So the instructions you have linked to will not work (they are for domains that are registered with WordPress.com). You will need to log into your GoDaddy account and use their instructions for changing your nameservers.

    Does that make sense?

Yes, that does make sense. And the name server was set to WordPress on that account, so I have now changed it and when a log on it gives the new GoDaddy name server. Yet it still is sending me back to WordPress when I am in the dashboard. I also uninstalled WordPress from the domain while I was logged on to GoDaddy, and the site is still up and running, so I presume this means it is not running on my current host. Are there still steps after changing the name server?

And again, thank you for your patience with my confusion.

I see now that the only additional thing I needed was patience. I forgot that there is quite a delay with the name server changes. It is all solved now, and I do thank you for the time you took to help.

  • Happy to help.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. Otherwise, thanks for using WordPress.
