I am not able to recover my website even after resetting CNAME data

  • Unknown's avatar

I had transfered my blog from WP.com to WP.org through Godaddy. However, it seems someone has hacked my website and now even after resetting my CNAME data on my WP.com site, I am not able to recover my blog. Whatever I create on the WP.org self host, I regularly upload .xml files to the WP.com site as a measure of backup.
But even after the reset, the HTTP 404 error is being delivered. Please help!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Can you please tell me exactly what URL is in your browser’s address bar when you get the 404 error message? That will help me investigate this for you.

My URL was trawellblogging.com. I have reset the CNAME from the self-host on Godaddy (I was using managed WP here) back to the earlier blog hosted on WP.com.

The CNAME settings have changed, and everything in the DNS records now points to WP.com, but the website shows HTTP404 error. I have tried using both trawellblogging.com as well as trawellblogging.wordpress.com by selecting the domains from the ‘My domain’ section. Same results. The URL is not able to reset on the WP.com server.

    Hi there,

I am able to see your site without any problems here: https://trawellblogging.wordpress.com/

I can also see it by visiting your domain name: http://trawellblogging.com/

Since you’re not able to view your site at either address, it sounds like there may be a connection problem between your computer and the WordPress.com servers. Are you having trouble accessing any other WordPress.com sites?

For example, please try opening these links:

If you also get an error when you try to visit those links, please let me know! If not, I can continue investigating to see why you’re getting that 404 error just on your site.

I am able to go to all these redirects and they are working absolutely fine. When I am selecting my domain names from here https://wordpress.com/my-domains

and trying to run it, the message is ‘HTTP Error 404 – File or Directory not found’.
Both trawellblogging.com and trawellblogging.wordpress.com are returning the same message. Has it got something to do with my computer files? Rest all your links are delivering perfectly.

    Hi there,

It could be that your internet service provider is not connecting to WordPress.com. Who is your internet provider?

One way to check that connection is to do a traceroute. We have instructions for doing a traceroute that you can follow. You can paste the results of the traceroute in your reply here or email us with that information, and I can take a look at it for you.

Thanks, I learnt a new thing today…It was for the first tym I did a traceroute. Interestingly, I did read about it two days ago on Dan Browns ‘The Lost Symbol’. So now I know what traceroute is…My website is delivering as of now. But, I definitely need to know whether its a hack or not. In which case, based on your advice, I will shift back to the self hosting only after you give an all OK.

Thanks a lot for being patient

    Hi there,

Thanks for sharing that traceroute. Based on that traceroute, it looks like the connection doesn’t get any farther than the ISP (Plusnet), which means Plusnet may be having trouble connecting to your site. (Nothing has changed on your site itself, though, so you don’t need to worry about hacks.)

You mentioned the website is working for you now, which is great news! If the problem comes back, you may need to get in touch with your ISP to find out if something in their system is blocking the site or having trouble connecting to WordPress.com.

You’re welcome to switch the domain back to your self-hosted site whenever you’re ready. Please let me know if I can do anything more to help.
