I am not using a widget area but it still takes up space

  I would like more space (horizontally) for widgets in the footer area. Therefore, I have placed all the widgets into three of four possible widget areas, assuming that the space would be divided into three (giving more space per widget area). What I found is that the fourth widget area still takes up its space even there are no widgets in it.

  Is it possible to change that? That it does not take up its space and it would be distributed amongst the three I use?
