I need to add my own theme to the page how do I go about doing that, do I really need a $300 subscription to do that?

Yes you do. If you want to upload third party themes (and plugins) you must upgrade to the Business Plan.

  • Hi @jenborrello,

As @staartmees mentions, yes on WordPress.com you do need our WordPress.com Business Plan in order to be able to upload your own theme.

To explain in a bit more detail, the theme you are trying to upload is designed for self-hosted WordPress sites, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc. They use the open-source version of the WordPress platform, and it is a bit more advanced (to accomodate developers and web designers) and that is the platform your theme is designed for.

On WordPress.com, it is possible to unlock these advanced features, but it requires our WordPress.com Business Plan or higher. You can learn more about our WordPress.com Business Plan here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If you prefer to try setting up your own self-hosted WordPress site instead, we recommend the following providers, who all offer easy-to-use wizards to help you get your first WordPress site set up and running:

    Hosting

That said, most major web hosting providers will work, so you can just ask if the one you are interested in supports WordPress. Please note that hosts do not usually provide WordPress support in-house, so you will want to use this forum instead when seeking help with your self-hosted site: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    Hope this helps!
