Sorry, plugins are not allowed on blogs at wordpress.COM for security reasons. Plugins are for self-hosted blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG.

Oh shit, I thought we can install plugins even when on the worldpress domain…….well that screws up the entire plan for my blog as of now

Is there any other way I can get facebook like features and turn my blog into a social collaboration site? I want my cult members to be able to collaborate freely and for free

Perhaps what you want to set up is a wiki. A wiki is a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG text editor. … A wiki allows users to collaboratively create and edit web pages using a web browser. There are free wikis available on the internet. You could create one and then to it form your blog.

You want Facebook Like buttons? You don’t need a plugin. And depending on how many members you have a blog may still suit you. How many?

So I’m new to word press. But basically i’m using it as a website. Im trying to use the google picasa plugin, but as I have learned you cant to plugins. i like wordpress.com, but what exactly do i use, in order to use plugins?

You would have to get your self a domain name (if you do not already have one) hire a web host such as godaddy, bluehost, etc., install and configure the wordpress.ORG software, export your stuff from here and then import it into the new site. Figure a total average cost of $10 to $25 per month, all things considered and depending on bandwidth and storage requirements.
You will have additional responsibilities. You will be responsible for all installations, all upgrade, all backups and all troubleshooting. If something goes wrong, you have to figure it out and fix it. WordPress now is a lot easier to self-host than it used to be, but it it’s still more work. BACKUPS! They are seriously important incase something goes wrong. Do them often and make sure that your backup the database as well. If you have a fairly recent backup and something goes wrong, you can reasonably easily restore your site and not lose too much.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/WordPress.COM also now offers a transfer service where they set up your new site and move everything over for you for $99.

Morning @TSP –
The price for the Guided Transfer to have one of the Happiness Engineers move your site to a .ORG has changed to $ 119.– (just happened to look on my Upgrades page) Guess they found out the transfer process was not always straight forward. But still a good deal I think.
