I am trying to create blogs with my students.

All my students, when trying to create accounts for WordPress, keep getting the error message “an error has occured (666)” when typing in their email addresses. This is happening seemingly at random, because a few students can get it to work, while most can not.
I’ve tried doing one at a time. I’ve tried using the same laptop. I’ve tried using the desktops that aren’t on wireless. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the error message popping up.

Thanks macmanx, that did not work. Most of my students are still getting the error message, and are unable to create an account.

It seems that WordPress is not very student friendly, because we were able to create 5 blogs today, then it cut us off, banning us from creating any more for 60 minutes.

  • We have a defensive measure in place to stop spam accounts which basically prevents an excessive number of signups within the same day from the same IP.

With that said, your class shouldn’t be large enough to set this off, but most schools use the same IP address for the entire school. I’m willing to bet there’s another class at your school trying to do the same thing, and probably running into the same problem. Depending on the size, two or three classes trying to sign up on the same day may be enough to trigger the defense mechanism.

Can you find out what IP address your school network uses? If so, we’ll add it to our safe list.
