I am trying to recover my account

  • Unknown's avatar

My account has become attached to another account, that belongs to someone I know. We are both receiving all the emails, so I know what is going on. How do we separate these 2 accounts?

  • Hi there!

I’m not sure what you mean by that. Accounts on WordPress.com are always independent of each other, it’s not possible to create two accounts with the same email address.
If you could elaborate a bit on that, we might be able to advise better.

The group I belong to has a WordPress website (a free one) and account. We usef to use it a lot, but now rarely do, but want to keep the domain name. Earlier this year, one of the group had reason to use it and somehow has associated it with a 2nd email address that she has used to buy another WordPress domain name. We are now both getting the emails associated with her new account and I can no longer access our account. They need to be uncoupled. Can you help? Thanks

  • What is the URL of the site you’re trying to access?

  • Could you let us know both addresses that are getting emails? We can check on that; it’s possible its just a subscription thing, as your username is not on that site.

  • Also if you’ll just type the addresses here, only staff will be able to see them. They’ll be redacted from the public view. We can use that to see what types of emails are being sent to each address from our end.

Thanks.  I was worried about private sharing details on the forum.

The account I am using to contact you is a new account basically set up just to do this!

The account I am trying to sort is/was attached to:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)      with a user name:     streathamwi

The account that has taken it over by mistake has an email:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
as this is another person’s private account I know no more details, but I can ask her to provide them if necessary.

  • Thanks; we just need the email addresses.

Can you clarify what issue you’re having? You mentioned the accounts are accidentally connected, but I’m not seeing that on on our end.

We are both receiving all the emails, so I know what is going on.

Is the main problem that you’re receiving all of the emails? If so, is there any chance someone has an automated email forwarder set up? Let us know which emails you’re getting, and any other issues you’re running into. We’ll help you untangle this.

So there are 2 problems: The first is that I no longer have access to the streathamwi user or its website. When I try to login it says this user has been deleted. I want this user relinked back to the (email visible only to moderators and staff). The second is this email is or possibly was receiving emails about (email visible only to moderators and staff) changes (account upgrades, password changes etc), which is nothing to do with me, except as they affect my Streathamwi user. This isn’t email forwarding. I suspect it happened by accident because the other person may have forgotten to logout of streathamwi before starting a new account when she recently bought an upgrade. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi @streathamwomensinstitute

suspect it happened by accident because the other person may have forgotten to logout of streathamwi before starting a new account when she recently bought an upgrade.

when I look on my end I can confirm that streathamwi was not deleted, it was renamed to a different username, and set to use a different email address.

In our system this would make it appear that streathamwi is deleted, as we do not allow usernames to be recycled, but it is not deleted just under a different name now.

Did you happen to hand off ownership of this site to a new admin? We have a process for handling this but it sounds indeed someone changed the details of the account you were sharing with them instead of creating their own standalone account.

Is this the case? Thanks for confirming.

The person who currently has ownership of this account belongs to the same committee and so had access to streathamwi but not ownership. Unfortunately in her personal life, she needed a new wordpress account and has accidentally taken over ours as you have now determined.

We need our content and control back, but without the other person losing her content. Is there a way to separate the 2 accounts (I have no idea about her content)? Or can our content be transferred to this account (it should be fairly easy to determine which is which from when the new account was set up) and then this account be renamed to streathamwi and the login altered to user name and password from email and google login? I assume once this is done we can then easily change the associated email address back ourselves.

Hopefully we are making progress, now we know how this happened. Thanks

  • At this point, it’s best if you used the email address that was originally used on the account and sent an email to passwordhelp@wordpress.com.

Our Account Recovery team might be able to give you more details and help you out. You can share the link to this thread in your email so that you don’t need to repeat what you already told us. Thanks!
