I am trying to set up a free Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

This site is driving me nuts! All I want to do is create a blog, and apparently, I can create a free blog site. I dont want a domain name!!! The help indicates that I can set up a free blog, but when I try to launch the site, it wants me to select a domain name.

ALL blogs need a domain name. They do NOT need a custom domain name. But you have to have a domain name because that’s the address of the blog. You need Whatever.wordpress.com. You don’t need to buy Whatever.com.

Hi there, when you are ready to launch your site and are at the step where it say “Choose Your Address” or somesuch, look at the bottom of that page and see if the free address you already selected appears there with a link to “skip purchase”

If you don’t see that, please take a screenshot and upload it to your site’s Media Library so Staff can take a look. Thanks.

Thanks for your replies. 1. The site doesn’t seem to let me choose a name such as Whatever.wordpress.com. It insists on me choosing a custom domain name.
    2. There is no link with skip purchase at the bottom. I may have done something wrong when initially setting up the site, and have thought of closing the whole thing down. However, I can’t them set up a new one for 30 days. The whole thing is not very helpful.

I am having exactly the same experience. It will not let me out of the loop that forces at minimum a $4/month purchase.

  • Hi y’all –

Please try going to https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and using the “start with free” button at the top of the page. Let me know if that works.

The reason you’re not seeing the free option in the setup flow is because of the selections that were previously made in that process. This should work.

This doesn’t work for me. While it does offer one domain option that’s free, the extension is “.art.blog.” The option I chose at the start was Blog.

If you chose “Blog” at step one you’ll be offered a free subdomain ending in .blog. If that isn’t acceptable, choose “Business” at step one. Then you should be offered a .wordpress.com subdomain (if your chosen address isn’t already taken……the main reason for the introduction of .blog which increases available options).

And there are lots of options for free subdomains under the .blog domain. One could get quite clever.

Thanks for all your help. I have tried various options. Maybe I am mistaken, and there is not a free version. When I click “Start with free” it gives me an option to have a free domain name for one year, but it still costs $5 /month. Is that what free really means??

    Thanks,

    Alison.

  • @alibowling,

If you choose a “free domain name for one year”, it means you’re selecting a custom domain, and that requires a paid plan.

For the free plan you must instead select the free *.wordpress.com address, or if you selected “Blog” in the first step, the free *.home.blog/*.art.blog/*.photos.blog etc address that is selected.

I now have two sites. Both show up as “Free domain with a plan”. How can I delete both of them, so that I can start again?

  • I only see two free sites in your account, https://alibowling.wordpress.com/ and https://insightsalongthewayblog.wordpress.com/

What you’re seeing are paid plans and domains added to the cart, but for which you haven’t completed payment. If you don’t want to buy those upgrade, click the View Cart link that appears in the notice when you view either site in My Sites, and once the cart loads, remove the upgrades from the cart.

You should also be able to go directly to the cart using this link:

    https://wordpress.com/checkout/alibowling.wordpress.com

Aside from removing the upgrades there, you shouldn’t need to delete anything.
