I am unable to use , or < and >, within inline code format

I would like to display “<head>” but have it in code format. I also want it to be displayed inline as part of a normal text paragraph.
If I type
<head>then the escape sequences are displayed instead of displaying < and >.If I type
<head>then the whole lump disappears and is not shown in the paragraph.Please tell me why the escape sequences are not compatible with the inline code format?
