I am using the Gazette blog theme, and am currently attempting to position a header image. The theme says it requires an image 2000 by 500 pixels, and I have cropped my image to fit those dimensions in Customizer. However, each time I update it, save it, and publish it, it only shows the upper left corner of the cropped image, and it is very zoomed in and blurry. What can I do to fix this problem?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I have cropped my image to fit those dimensions in Customizer.

Try resizing and cropping your image to the right dimensions offline. Then upload the resized image in the Customizer and set it as the header image.

If you don’t have image editing software, you can use the Pixlr.com web app to resize your image (http://pixlr.com/). Then save the edited image to your hard drive and upload to WordPress.com.

I just tried that, and the same problem occurred.

  • I had a look on my test blog (BTW, you’re using Gateway, not Gazette), and I see what you’re talking about. It appears to display the top-left third of the image only. I’m tagging this for staff to follow up, as I’ve no idea what could be doing this. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

You can see my private test blog for another example: https://kokkiehthemes.wordpress.com/

The header image I uploaded and which is visible in the Appearance ->Header section of the dashboard was sized to exactly 2000 by 500 pixels before I uploaded it, as per the dimensions given in the Customizer. However, the header on the blog front page only shows the top left 920 by 180 pixels, zooming the image in significantly as it does.

I’m wondering if the specs on the header screen/customizer themselves might not be wrong, as a 2000 pixel image doesn’t even fit on my widescreen PC monitor at 100% zoom, and the maximum column width on the full-width template for Gateway, as per the support doc, is only 1152 pixels wide, so the header image can hardly be almost double that width.

Has this been solved? I am having the same problem with the gateway theme. I have tried resizing my photo in many different sizes (including the recommended size), but the result is the same: Showing only the top left corner of the image, zoomed in.

    Any new recommendations?

Did you even read my answers above? I tagged this for staff only half an hour ago. Please wait for them to respond.

    Hi there,

Thanks for letting us know about this! For now, you can change this by opening your site’s Customizer, going to the “Theme Options” section, and opening the “General” section there. Under “Header Image Attachment” you can choose “Scroll” to make your header image fit into the space at the top of your site.

I’m also checking with our team to see if we can change how the “Fixed” option works, so your header images don’t get stretched out there. I’ll let you know what I find out from our team. :)

I just switched it to scroll and then saved, but the image is still doing the same thing, just so you know. And thank you so much for the help!

Didn’t ask for rudeness, but thanks for your help. I did “even” read what you had written above. Tone it down…

    Hi there,

Our team made some changes to how the header image works in the Gateway theme, to avoid that issue with the image getting stretched out and cropped in funny ways. Please take a look and let me know if you have any more trouble with it! :)

  • @rachelmcr
Looks good on my test blog now :)

It looks good on my end now, too! Thanks so much for all your help. :)
